BWW Review: EXIT 27 - Brilliantly Thought-Provoking

EXIT 27 by Aleks Merilo, produced by Southwest Theatre Productions at the Boyd Vance Theatre is a fascinating study in mind control and the effects of cult religion on the innocent.

BWW Reviews: MAURITIUS is a Witty, Smartly Staged Dark Comic Delight

Having grown up in the world of numismatics (coin collecting) and philately (stamp collecting) I was probably in a rarified group in the audience by knowing just what a Mauritius was. It doesn't matter if you don't know anything though, because the playwright, Theresa Rebeck, gets the audience where it needs to be in short order.

Austin Theatre Project's GODSPELL Opens Tomorrow

Tomorrow, August 15th, the curtain will rise on Austin Theatre Project's tenth mainstage production. Godspell, the Broadway hit from the composer of Wicked and Pippin, is a delightfully engaging musical based on the story and teachings of Jesus.

BWW Reviews: Top Notch Cast Delivers Sparkling PYGMALION

Doing Shaw isn't for the timid, especially for modern audiences which have become expectant of a happy ending. There's a reason why "Pygmalion" remains Shaw's most popular play which has been turned into a movie, a stage musical, and a film musical. It's a classic Cinderella story, complete with slippers… in this case, though; they're thrown rather than worn. There's even a ball - well, a couple of parties, actually. The problem is…there's no Prince Charming. This fairy tale has no happy ending.

PYGMALION Opens Tonight at The Vortex

Different Stages closes its 2013-2014 season with Pygmalion, Shaw's most popular modern masterpiece, perhaps best known as the inspiration for the musical My Fair Lady. The poor flower-seller Eliza Doolittle is in the right place at the right time, just as speech professor Henry Higgins makes a friendly wager that he can change her accent and pass her off as the epitome of English society. But will she survive Higgins' bullying? PYGMALION is the funny, touching, unforgettable battle of wits between two of the theatre's most iconic characters.

Amy Lewis Pens WHAT FREEDOM SMELLS LIKE

The loss of a loved one is perhaps the most difficult emotional struggle faced by every human being. When Amy Lewis was with her young husband moments after his unexpected death, 'what I witnessed when I looked into his eyes was the beginning of my own personal revolution.' What Freedom Smells Like (Anomaly Press) is a memoir born of both a supernatural love story and a tale of transformative healing.

BWW Reviews: Loaded Gun Theory's Original BROTHERS MERLIN is Campy, Frivolous Fun

No matter what the show, most theatrical experiences are rather similar. You park your car, show your tickets to an usher, find your seat, sit quietly for a few hours, applaud the cast, and then go home. Still, once in a while a theater company has the brains and imagination to create a truly unique and unexpected experience. It's clear that Loaded Gun Theory is one such company which likes to push the envelope and break the traditional, predicable mold. The constant breaking of theatrical conventions is one of many ideas that makes their current production, The Brothers Merlin, such an unmitigated success.

Different Stages Presents TOO MANY HUSBANDS at The Vortex, Opens 7/16

Different Stages closes its 2010-2011 season with W. Somerset Maugham's comedy TOO MANY HUSBANDS. A fast and frivolous comedy, the plot focuses on Victoria, a delectably pretty but ruthlessly self-centered young woman whose husband, William, was reported killed three years earlier in World War I.
