The New Colony Premieres BYHALIA, MISSISSIPPI Tonight

The New Colony will launch its 2016 Season with the world premiere of the racially charged family drama BYHALIA, MISSISSIPPI, by Co-Artistic Director Evan Linder, directed by Tyrone Phillips and co-produced with Definition Theatre Company.

'JAZZ, JEWS, AND AFRICAN AMERICANS' Exhibit to Host Panel Discussion, 11/22

The exhibition Jazz, Jews, and African Americans: Cultural Intersections in Newark and Beyond, co-produced by New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers-Newark, Jewish Museum of New Jersey at Congregation Ahavas Sholom, and WBGO Jazz 88.3FM, will present a panel discussion regarding Jazz, Jews, and African Americans, a FREE exhibit.

Greenway Arts Alliance continues their season of world premieres with FRONT DOOR OPEN, a drama written by veteran playwright Tom Baum, directed by acclaimed theater and television director Asaad Kelada. There will be two preview performances tonight and tomorrow, November 11 and 12 at 8:00 pm with opening night set for Friday, November 13 at 8:00 pm.

BWW Review: DUTCHMAN Takes a Journey on a New York Subway Train with Two Lost Souls

Folklore tells us The Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship that can never make port and is doomed to sail the oceans forever. Amiri Baraka's thought-provoking play DUTCHMAN, directed with a sure hand by Levy Lee Simon at the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica, takes this concept into 1964 when Lula, a young white woman waiting on a New York subway platform, spots Clay, a black businessman, through the passing train's window and decides to join him for no other reason than to entice him to succumb to her physical charms.

Classical Theatre of Harlem's THE TEMPEST Begins Tonight

The 15th anniversary season of The Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH) (Ty Jones, Producing Artistic Director; David Roberts, Managing Director) continues with CTH's free, summer, uptown production of William Shakespeare's The Tempest, presented in partnership with City Parks Foundation's SummerStage festival. The Carl Cofield-directed production, which stars New York theater and Broadway veteran Ron Cephas Jones, will transform the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park into an enchanted Caribbean island where the magic takes flight, with an elaborate aerial design elements planned. The third annual CTH Under the Stars presentation holds previews tonight, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. Performances, which are free and open to the public, run from July 5 through 26.

Jazz Journalists Association Honors Chicago Writer/Broadcaster Neil Tesser

Neil Tesser, a Chicago-based jazz journalist, broadcaster, author, educator, former chair of the board of trustees of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and current board member of the Jazz Journalists Association, was honored with the JJA's 2015 Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism Award on Tuesday, June 16 at a cocktail reception at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City. Tesser's Award topped 2015 JJA Jazz Awards for excellence in media, winners of which were announced at the party.

Cast Set for Amiri Baraka's Last Play at Woodie King Jr's New Federal Theatre

Woodie King Jr's New Federal Theatre will continue its 46th season dedicated to Amira Baraka with the world premiere of his final play, The Most Dangerous Man In America (W. E. B. Du Bois).  Performances will begin May 28th, with opening night set for June 11th at the Castillo Theater (543 West 42nd Street). This limited Off-Broadway engagement, directed by Woodie King Jr., will continue through June 28th only.
