Native Voices at the Autry Kicks Off LEGAL BRIEFS Short Play Festival Today

Native Voices at the Autry continues its vital role as the country's only equity theatre company dedicated exclusively to developing the work of Native American Playwrights with its third annual Short Play Festival, featuring staged readings of six engaging short plays on the theme 'Legal Briefs: Lawmakers & Activists' written by veteran playwrights today, November 10, 1:30 p.m., at the Wells Fargo Theater at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles.

NERDS Musical Returns to Philadelphia Theatre Company, 11/29-12/29

It's back - the funny, smart, and irreverent musical Nerds! Philadelphia Theatre Company revisits the musical satire Nerds with book and lyrics by Jordan Allen-Dutton and Erik Weiner, music by Hal Goldberg, and a brand new cast and creative team. Directed by Casey Hushion with choreography by Joshua Bergasse, the ensemble features Stanley Bahorek, Matt Bradley, Briana Carlson-Goodman, Benny Elledge, Lexy Fridell, Raymond J. Lee, Alyse Alan Louis, Robert Morrison, Kevin Pariseau, Catherine Ricafort, and Blake Segal.

Marin Theatre Now Booking for 2014 School Tour of RAPUNZEL, 1/13-2/7

Marin Theatre Company is now booking for its 2014 School Tour of Rapunzel, written by Mike Kenny, directed by Daunielle Rasmussen, MTC's Director of Education, and featuring actors Tristan Cunningham, Britney Frazier and Julianna Rees. Now in its seventh year, MTC's School Tour program brings professional theater productions to Bay Area elementary schools and libraries. Bookings for Rapunzel are available from January 13 through February 7, 2014.

The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University and the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research (formerly known as the Du Bois Institute), in conjunction with Hilton Als of The New Yorker, will present a staged reading of Alice Childress's Wedding Band: A Love-Hate Story in Black and White, co-directed by Hilton Als and A.R.T. Artistic Associate Shira Milikowsky. It takes place at the Loeb Drama Center, 64 Brattle Street, Cambridge, starting at 7:30pm, and will be followed by a post-reading discussion.

Cygnet Theatre, in collaboration with Playwrights Project, is proud to present the second annual Playwrights in Process: New Play Festival. Cygnet Theatre has long been committed to celebrating human stories through the medium of live theatre. Playwrights in Process will present four readings of new plays by Rachael VanWormer, Ross Tedford Kendall, Robert John Ford and Todd Goodlett, each of whom is a Southern California playwright or a writer with strong regional connections. The four winners were selected from 54 submissions from across the country.

Submission Period Opens for Marin Young Playwrights Festival

The submission window for the fifth annual Marin Young Playwrights Festival is now open. The deadline for submission is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 22, 2013. High school students currently enrolled in grades 9-12 are encouraged to submit ten-minute plays for selection to be performed as staged readings directed and acted by teens at Marin Theatre Company (397 Miller Avenue, Mill Valley) on Sunday, January 19, 2014. The eight finalists will be announced on Monday, December 16, 2013. This year will be the first year that the festival will have no geographic limitations for submissions - one of the eight finalists will be chosen from outside Marin and Sonoma Counties.

Amas' Free Staged Readings of New Frida Kahlo Musical Begin Today

Amas Musical Theatre (Donna Trinkoff/Artistic Producer) will present three free staged readings of "FRIDA" a new musical by Michael Aman and Dana P. Rowe, directed by Maria Torres. Julia Flood Named New Artistic Director of Metro Theater Company

After a national search that attracted more than forty applicants, Metro Theater Company's Board of Directors has selected Julia Flood to lead the company forward as artistic director, succeeding Carol North, who will step down this winter after thirty-six years with the organization. Flood assumes her new post in February.

Alameda Theatre Opens 2013 De Colores Festival of New Works Today

The playwright's festival that started it all for Latin American Playwrights in Canada is going into its sixth year. To date the one of a kind festival has developed the new works of over 20 Latin American writers in Canada. Featuring works by Bruce Gibbons, Jefferson Guzman, Flavia Hevia and Rosa Laborde, the 6th annually De Colores Festival of New Works will be presented at the Wychwood Theatre today, October 16 to 18.

Cornerstone Theater Co. to Present LOVE ON SAN PEDRO World Premiere, 11/7-11/24

Cornerstone Theater Company is thrilled to present the world premiere of the fourth play in its Hunger Cycle, Love on San Pedro, an unlikely love story set in the intricate and vibrant community of Skid Row, downtown Los Angeles. Love on San Pedro was written by James McManus through a partnership with Full Stage USA at New Dramatists, a program made possible by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The play is directed by Cornerstone ensemble member Shishir Kurup. It will be presented at Los Angeles Mission, opening November 7 and running Wednesdays through Sundays until November 24.
