Festival Ballet Theatre (FBT), Orange County's resident professional ballet company, will present the family favorite production of The Nutcracker, December 9 - 24, 2017 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre in Irvine, California.
Casting for American Ballet Theatre's The Nutcracker, co-presented by Segerstrom Center for the Arts and ABT, was announced today by Kevin McKenzie, ABT Artistic Director and Terry Dwyer, Segerstrom Center President. Choreographed by ABT Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky, The Nutcracker will be given 13 performances at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, December 7-17, 2017. Misty Copeland and Daniil Simkin will lead the opening night cast on December 7 dancing the roles of Clara, the Princess and Nutcracker, the Prince, respectively. Subsequent casts include Sarah Lane and Herman Cornejo, Gillian Murphy and James Whiteside, Stella Abrera and Alexandre Hammoudi, and Hee Seo and Cory Stearns in the leading roles.
Works & Process at the Guggenheim is pleased to announce its Spring 2018 Season. On November 12, 2017, the Auditorium Theatre held its Annual Fall Gala, honoring Sonia Florian of the NIB Foundation with the second annual Adler and Sullivan Award. Guests attended a cocktail reception and dinner at the Standard Club before proceeding to the theatre for A Golden Celebration of Dance, a performance honoring the 50th anniversary of the theatre's grand re-opening in 1967. The performance featured dancers from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, Berlin State Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, The Joffrey Ballet, MOMIX, New York City Ballet, Parsons Dance, The Suzanne Farrell Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Vienna State Ballet, and The Washington Ballet.

Following an exciting and competitive search, the Columbus Symphony has appointed Stuart Chafetz as its principal pops conductor. A leading figure among pops conductors across the country, Chafetz brings experience and innovation to his new role leading the Columbus Symphony in its year-round pops concert series. Through the 2018-19 season, he will design programs with enjoyable repertoire for widely diverse audiences and invite both well-known and rising guest artists for the CSO's Pops Series, as well as its two outdoor summer concert series at the Columbus Commons, Picnic with the Pops and the family-friendly Popcorn Pops.

The first portion of the night was dedicated to the ballet class for students representing both the Dance Theatre of Harlem and the Harlem School for the Arts. As a teacher, Copeland embodied gentle, down-to-earth authority, unopposed to getting on the floor to adjust a stance or hold up a limb. With a focus on proper technique, her descriptive breakdown of the body mechanics at work in each exercise, made the tasks easy to understand and her encouraging demeanor exuded both patience and humor.
