Carnegie Hall's Distinctive Debuts Series Presents Itamar Zorman, 11/5

Superb violinist Itamar Zorman, described as a "virtuoso of emotions" (Goettinger Tageblatt), will make his Carnegie Hall recital debut as part of Carnegie Hall's Distinctive Debuts Series at Weill Recital Hall (154 West 57th St.) on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 7:30pm. Zorman was recently awarded the 2014 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, the 2013 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and in 2011 was one of two top prize winners at the Tchaikovsky International Violin Competition. His program, with pianist Kwan Yi, will include J.S. Bach's Solo Violin Sonata No. 3 in C Major; Schnittke's Violin Sonata No. 2, "Quasi una sonata;" Hindemeth's Solo Violin Sonata, Op. 31, No. 1; and Brahms' Violin Sonata No. 3 in D Minor. The Hindemith and Brahms are included on Zorman's debut album, which also features music by Messiaen, Schubert, and Chausson, released in Europe by Profil-Editions Gunther Hanssler in spring 2014 (CDs available upon request).

Nitzan Haroz Appointed Principal Trombone for Philadelphia Orchestra

The Philadelphia Orchestra announces the appointment of Nitzan Haroz as principal trombone, effective immediately. Haroz returns to The Philadelphia Orchestra, where he was principal trombone from 1995 to 2012, after serving for two years in the same position with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Eastern European melodies inspire an evolution of music that ranges from the expansive Gypsy lines of Brahms to the intimate, cosmos-searching details of Ligeti in “Brahms, Bartók and Beyond,” the stirring final concert of Pacific Symphony's 2013-14 Café Ludwig series. Steeped with the charm of traditional folk music, compositions by Bartók and Brahms—two masters of the genre—round out Ligeti's innovative and probing “Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet,” which explores the very foundations of music theory. Piano sensation Orli Shaham returns in her seventh season to host Symphony principal musicians including Benjamin Smolen on flute, Jessica Pearlman on oboe, Benjamin Lulich on clarinet, Rose Corrigan on bassoon, Keith Popejoy on horn, Raymond Kobler on violin, Robert Becker on viola and Timothy Landauer on cello, in the Samueli Theater on Sunday, May 11 (Mother's Day), at 3 p.m.

Haifa Symphony Orchestra of Israel to Play Marin Center, Today

The HAIFA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA OF ISRAEL recently received the Prime Minister's Award for being the leading performer of original Israeli compositions. Now, this illustrious orchestra will come to the United States for the first time ever featuring soloist, Pianist Roman Rabinovich, who will perform Pyotr Ilyick Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-Flat Minor, Op. 23. Led by conductor Boguslaw Dawidow, the Haifa Symphony Orchestra will also perform Carl Maria Von Weber's Overture to the Opera Euryanthe and Antonin Dvo?ak's Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95.
