BWW Review: The Stirring New Musical COME FROM AWAY Plays Ford's Theatre
by Jennifer Perry
- Sep 11, 2016
Featuring a book, music, and lyrics by the married Canadian duo of Irene Sankoff and David Hein, Come From Away explores a subject area that's bound to bring up some painful memories for some. It's a September 11th musical, but not in the way you might expect. It's not about the towers, the Pentagon, or even really the loss of life. it is a story of a community bonding together to embrace passengers on the 38 planes that were diverted to Canada - specifically Newfoundland - when the U.S. Government closed American air space for the first time in U.S. history. It's one of those untold stories that is practically perfect for an original musical.

BWW Review: CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF Sizzles at Round House
by Keith Tittermary
- Apr 7, 2016
Brick, the fermenting favorite son in Tennessee Williams' masterpiece, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof says that there are two ways out of life: death and liquor. Brick is trying to escape his life with the latter, while Big Daddy is facing the first. Father and son are so far away from each other that when the climax of the show occurs during the second act, you see the intersection between one who wants to live and one who wants to forget.

BWW Reviews: THE NIGHT FAIRY Learns the Law of the Jungle at Imagination Stage
by Lorna Mulvaney
- Sep 29, 2014
At first glance, Imagination Stage's Night Fairy is a story about an injured Night Fairy who must learn to survive in the daytime. However, although Flory the Night Fairy does manage to survive in her new ecosystem, the means by which she thrives often seem overly harsh and not all that noble.
BWW Reviews: RICHARD III Stabs Through Expectations at Folger Theater
by G. Blaise Hoeler
- Feb 6, 2014
According to the news, on the same day that a giant horde of sea hawks from Seattle, Washington, pulverized an equally as large but not quite as majestic army of broncos from Colorado in East Rutherford, New Jersey, another battle was being waged in the Folger Shakespeare Theatre. This battle, however, was between Richard III and the rest of the world.

BWW Reviews: Sardonic and Witty, BECKY SHAW Makes Area Premiere at Round House Theatre
by Jennifer Perry
- Jun 4, 2013
When newly-minted Round House Theatre Producing Artistic Director Ryan Rilette announced that Gina Gionoffrido's Becky Shaw would replace another show - selected by his predecessor - in the theatre company's current season, I was pretty interested to see how it would turn out. I had the chance to check out the 2009 New York premiere at Second Stage Theatre and was largely impressed with not only the cast, but the play itself. Not your run of the mill kind of schmaltzy and cutesy romantic comedy, this play veers toward the edgy and dark side while offering valuable insights on human relationships and related boundaries/rules of the road with the help of some richly drawn characters.
