In his Sonnet 116, William Shakespeare wrote, 'Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments' -- and impediments there are aplenty in A.R. Gurney's oft-performed LOVE LETTERS, which Director Anthony Isbell and a sterling, rotating cast of three couples has staged at the intimate Germantown Community Theatre. It's a St. Valentine's gift to the community, to be sure; and as soon as you enter the atmospheric lobby, pay heed to the scattering of deep-red rose petals and the framed quotations of letters from famous lovers -- everyone from John Keats to (even) Oscar Wilde to Johnny Cash. You'll be doing yourself a disservice if you don't, as they establish a real mood for what takes place on stage.
As a new year begins, Connecticut's professional theater scene offers many exciting viewing opportunities including premieres of new shows as well as some old some old favorites. What shows am I most looking forward to? Here are some tops picks for 2016:
710 Main Theatre presents the 2015 - 16 Frey Electric Construction Co. Season. The exciting season features a diverse mix of programming including collaborations with two local theatre companies, two Off-Broadway productions and one show that ran on Broadway during the 2014-15 Season! THREE OF THIS SEASON'S OFFERINGS WERE WRITTEN BY BUFFALO PLAYWRIGHTS: Laura Pedersen "For Heaven's Sake!" with the story also set in Buffalo, and two plays by Buffalo's own A.R. Gurney: "Sylvia" and "Love Letters."
In September's VANITY FAIR Magazine's feature, 'My Stuff,' MICHAEL KORS, superstar fashion designer/entrepeneur (and astute former 'Project Runway' judge), tells VF's readers that his favorite movie is 'All About Eve;' his favorite gadget is his Black Mercedes S550; his stationary is Cartier, his three muses are Jackie Kennedy, Lauren Hutton and Ali McGraw; and one of his 'Top three DVR shows' is THEATER TALK (along with Mad Men and Big Cat Diary).
Short North Stage will present its 2014-15 season starting on October 2 with Sunset Boulevard, the musical version of Billy Wilder's Academy Award-winning 1950 movie of the same name. The score by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is considered by many to be one of his finest. The book and lyrics are by Don Black and Christopher Hampton. Sunset Boulevard is a Hollywood legend about a faded 1920s silent-screen star, Norma Desmond, who lives in a decaying mansion on the fabled Los Angeles street. A chance meeting with a down-and-out screenwriter, Joe Gillis, feeds into her dream of writing a film that will be her comeback to the silver screen. Winning Tony Awards on Broadway for Best Musical, Best Book and Score and Best Actress in 1995, Sunset Boulevard opened originally in London starring Patti LuPone and later productions featured such stars as Betty Buckley, Glenn Close, Diahann Caroll and Petula Clark. Actor Hugh Jackman made his first stage splash as Joe Gillis in the Australian production. Performances run from Oct 2-19 on the Garden Theater Main Stage.
If Betty Comden and Adolph Green were both born in Bombay, Singin' In The Rain might have wound up resembling The New Group's new musical, Bunty Berman Presents…. Not that Ayub Khan Din (book, music and lyrics) and Paul Bogaev's (music) Bollywood-set musical comedy is on the same level as that masterwork, but the spirit of silly 1950s MGM hijinks abounds throughout the evening. It's got laughs, it's got tunes and it offers a fun, mindless time.
I suppose Richard Foreman doesn't have many talkbacks after performances of his plays because, really, how many times can you respond to an audience member asking, 'What the f***?'

When Theater of the Stars premieres its 2012 production of 'Annie' Saturday night at Atlanta's Fox Theatre, audiences will find a familiar face in the role of disillusioned orphanage matron Miss Hannigan. But then, Sally Struthers has quite a bit of familiarity with the role, too.
