Photo Flash: AMERIKE - THE GOLDEN LAND Celebrates Opening Night Off-Broadway

In a time when issues of immigration, assimilation, xenophobia, and socio-economic upheaval are more present than ever, the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene will bring to the stage a reimagined version of Moishe Rosenfeld and Zalmen Mlotek's Amerike-The Golden Land, a musical journey of the immigration experience. Playing at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, across from the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, from which the story has taken inspiration, this limited Off Broadway engagement opened last night and will run through August 6th. A modern twist on Victorian toy theater, this imaginative staging combines music, scenic elements, puppetry, and movement, plus the clever verses of Ogden Nash. Curtain-raisers from the 16th Century to present-day set the stage and kindle the spirit of the holidays. Just about an hour in length, this family-friendly presentation is the perfect December treat to delight imaginative audiences of all ages.

New Georges Announces THE AUDREY RESIDENCIES for 2013-14

At a benefit event held for New Georges on Sunday, September 22, Producing Artistic Director Susan Bernfield and board member Michael Osso announced a new program at New Georges, The Audrey Residencies, and the artists and projects chosen for 2013-14, the program's inaugural year. Sunday's event also featured the premiere showing of a video about New Georges produced by tdf for tdfSTAGES' Meet the Theatre series and directed by Mark Blankenship, tdf's online content editor, to be released in early November.

A Theatre Lover's Guide to DC/Capital Area Theatres - August 2011 Offerings

Thank God for air-conditioning in our DC/MD/VA area theatres! In August it will be sizzling in our local theatres. Signature Theatre has its 'Sizzlin' Summer Cabaret' series with visits from Broadway favorites Marc Kudisch and Julia Murney, and Signature favorites Erin Driscoll, Sandy Bainum, and Lauren Williams. The talk of the town is Cate Blanchett visiting The Eisenhower Theatre at The Kennedy Center, where a hundred yards away Wicked is playing to SRO audiences (what else is new?).
