Johanna Chase BIO

Seattle born, Johanna Chase, is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Having toured several times nationally and regionally (Pretty Kind of Off White Tour 2006, TMJ Tour 2008, I Heart People Tour 2011), Johanna Chase is a seasoned veteran to the indie and grass roots music scene on the West Coast. Opening for Noah Gundersen, Aaron Sprinkle, Barcelona, David Bazan, Robert DeLong and Allen Stone to name a few, Johanna's earlier folk/rock song writing came from her Northwest roots. Her career beginnings have led her to play in notable venues across the country with other up and coming artists as well as collaborating with Huit Kilos (Ricardo Lemvo), Joey Ryan (Milk Carton Kids), Robert DeLong (Glassnote Records), and Z the Band (Nas). Her latest studio record "#<3" was produced by Roger Greenawalt (Ben Kweller, Rhett Miller, Nelly McKay, Rufus Wainwright, Afro-Jersey) in Williamsburg Brooklyn.? ?
She has independently funded five full length records since 2002 as well as, The I Heart People Tour (2011), her travels to SXSW (2012) and her 6th studio record "#<3" (2013) through support of her fans and collaborators through online outlets, such as kickstarter.com. The Los Angeles Times spotlighted Johanna in their review of The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later for her live scoring and Broadwayworld.com likened Chase’s voice to Judy Collins. Audience members, Jane Lynch, SIA and Lily Tomlin all applauded Chase's instrumental role in the Laramie Project. In the fall of 2015 she underscored the SOLD OUT and Triple Extended Ike Holter play, "Hit The Wall", at the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center, playing original songs written by Anna Woronker and Charlotte Chaffey. After releasing her second self-produced record in 2016, "SOLO.B" she took it on the road to the SouthWest and will be returning to the SouthWest for the 2017 SXSW.
Her collaborative cover of "De Colores" with Las Cafeteras and Gina Chavez is featured in Carlos Santana's production of "Dolores", a biopic about Dolores Huerte.

BWW Review: Color and Light Theatre Ensemble's LIZZIE is Rage Rock at its Finest

How much rage would a person need to feel to kill two people with 29 whacks of an axe? The short answer is, a lot. That's the number Andrew Borden and his second wife Abby actually sustained in 1892 - not the 81 immortalized in this haunting nursery rhyme.

BWW Review: History Revisited in THE VIEW UPSTAIRS

The west coast premiere of THE VIEW UPSTAIRS bursts with a high-energied hodge-podge of some great vocals, charming performances and wonderfully executed choreography. Playwright Max Vernon, through the eyes of a present-day electronically dependent fashion designer, retells the stories of victims of a fire by arson at the gay bar UpStairs Lounge in New Orleans back in June of 1973.

BWW Review: Powerfully Passionate HIT THE WALL Pulls No Punches

The West Coast premiere of Ike Holter's HIT THE WALL vividly illustrates what might have happened that fateful night in 1969  when Stonewall became the flashpoint for what many consider the start of the gay liberation movement. With director Ken Sawyer's inventive staging, the audience becomes almost fully immersed in the play's actions. The stage seems to be every available space where an audience member's not physically sitting.

BWW Reviews: THE LARAMIE PROJECT: TEN YEARS LATER Makes its L.A. Premiere a Memorable Theatrical Experience

THE LARAMIE PROJECT: TEN YEARS LATER is a play meant to be experienced, not just seen. And you will be fully immersed from the moment you walk inside this intimate theater-in-the-round staging. With the silhouettes of the audience seated across the room against the background of rolling hills, sky and prairie on the theater walls, you will feel as if you are right there in Laramie, literally pulled into the lives of every person represented onstage.
