Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice is a contemporary reimagining of the classical Greek myth of ill-fated love between Orpheus, a legendary musician and poet, and his newly-wed wife Eurydice who tragically dies on her wedding day from a deadly snake bite. In this poetic exploration of Eurydice's journey beyond death, the playwright eliminates several specifics of the myth such as venomous vipers and mournful nymphs. Instead, in order to complicate Eurydice's spiritual growth, she introduces new characters such as Eurydice's father and a Nasty Interesting Man. The play is a dramatic poem weaving a complex and sometimes contradictory web of images and associations. Moving between the worlds of life and death, our production explores the power of love and sacrifice, the inevitability of loss, and the importance of memory for our ability to engage, rejoice, and suffer.
Please join us immediately following the February 21 performance for an Opening Night Reception and post-show discussion with the cast, dramaturg, and director.
