The Seeing Place to Offer Free Performance of Eve Ensler's NECESSARY TARGETS
The Seeing Place Theater will present a free performance of NECESSARY TARGETS by Eve Ensler. Based on interviews conducted by Eve Ensler with numerous women who survived the civil war in the former Yugoslavia, NECESSARY TARGETS is a timely reminder of how America struggles to define its relationship to the rest of the world.
The play is being produced in conjunction with World Refugee Day, as a part of our TSP Unplugged Reading Series, where audiences go behind the scenes with The Seeing Place to experience our work "unplugged." We'll start at 7:30pm with the audience observing our artists discussing the play in their final rehearsal, laying the ground-work for how the actors will approach the piece during the reading. At 8:15pm we'll begin the reading. Immediately following the reading we'll discuss what was seen - what is the modern relevance of the play? What would a theater company want to consider if producing the play as a ful production? These and other questions will be explored during this lively event.
The NY Times calls the play "...a bold and provocative theme for Ms. Ensler...artistically introspective...bristles with enough tantalizing topics to fuel a year's worth of symposium." And the USA Today says, "Rather than elegantly personifying the psychological repercussions of war, [Ensler's] characters behave like ordinary people under extraordinary duress...Ensler's straightforward intensity and delicate comic relief make [her characters' plight] absorbing and moving."
This special one-night only engagement boasts an all female team, produced & directed by Erin Cronican and starring Olivia Baseman*, Ashanti Brown, Brisa Freitas, Emily Newhouse, Lisa-Marie Newton*, Elisabeth Rose and Paula Rossman*. (* = Members of Actors Equity Association)

In NECESSARY TARGETS, two American women, a Park Avenue psychiatrist and an ambitious young writer, travel to Bosnia to help women refugees confront their memories of war. Though the two have little in common beyond the methods they use to distance themselves from their subjects, they emerge deeply changed as they confront their own fears in the face of violence, resiliency and war.
