Shakespeare Meets Hip Hop Fusion in Queens With THE SONNET MAN 2/12
If music be the food of love, play...On Saturday, February 12th just in time for Valentine's Day and perfect for the entire family, Jackson Repertory Theatre (Alison Ostergaard, Artistic Director) will present a special one night concert at 8PM in Jackson Heights, Queens at P.S. 69 featuring THE SONNET MAN, the energetic hip hop Shakespeare fusion group starring Devon Glover. Conceived by Broadway playwright Arje Shaw (The Gathering) and with music by Daniel Lynas, THE SONNET MAN sets Shakespeare's soulful sonnets to song with a contemporary hip hop twist, blending classical literature with an urban beat and introducing a whole new generation to The Bard and his most beloved poetry. THE SONNET MAN album is currently on sale on iTunes.
THE SONNET MAN concert on February 12th will officially kick off Jackson Repertory Theatre's 2011 season, which includes an exciting concert series with special performances nearly every month ranging from Colombian music (in March) to modern dance (in June) to classical chamber music (in August) and jazz (in September). THE SONNET MAN also has a special one night concert at The Triad in Manhattan this Friday evening at 9PM.Devon Glover just appeared on NBC's 'The Today Show' last week on Thursday, January 6th (you can view that appearance here: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/40947731#40947731), and joining him in THE SONNET MAN group are Allan Mednard on Drums, Alex Violette on Bass, Jeremy Sherron on Keyboard, Robin Hood on Guitar, and vocals from Melissa Guttman and Meghan Early. In the weeks after the performance, with Jackson Repertory, Devon Glover will lead a few special workshops for students ages 13-16, allowing them to try their own hand at writing and performing original sonnets.
