Repertorio Español is proud to present the world premiere of AUNT JULIA AND THE SCRIPTWRITER (Tía Julia y El Escribidor) - a play by OBIE Award Winning playwright Caridad Svich (12 OPHELIAS, THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS) under the direction of José Zayas. Based on the eponymous, autobiographical novel by Nobel Prize-winning, iconic Latin-American writer Mario Vargas-Llosa, AUNT JULIA AND THE SCRIPTWRITER follows the passionate love story between a young Vargas-Llosa and an older divorcee in 1950s Lima, Peru. A boisterous high-spirited comedy with a big-hearted romantic story at its center, AUNT JULIA AND THE SCRIPTWRITER is a play that playwright Svich calls "a coming-of-age story about the performance of everyday life, the wonderfully disordered nature of love, and an homage to the golden age of radio and the spirit of classic screwball comedies based on one of Vargas Llosa's most exuberant novels in his vast body of work." The play will have its world premiere at Repertorio Español on Saturday, October 10th at 8:00 PM. Featuring a stellar cast including Pablo Andrade, Zulema Clares, Dalia Davi, Gerardo Gudiño, Luís Carlos de la Lombana, Christian López-Lamelas and Alfonso Rey, with special appearances by Germán Jaramillo and Ana Margarita Martínez Casado. Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter will be presented in Spanish with English subtitles.

ABOUT THE PLAY: An 18-year-old aspiring writer, Mario, is introduced to his much older divorcee "aunt-in-law" who has come from Bolivia to Peru to find a new husband. What begins as benign flirtation and a shared love of cinema flourishes into a passionate - and forbidden - affair that will scandalize and entertain the radio-novela focused world of 1950s Lima, Peru. As Mario and aunt Julia charge into a world of taboo desire, Mario's mysterious colleague - a novela writer who goes by the name of Pedro Camacho - entrances the citizens of Lima by transmitting a tale of love and lust over the airwaves of Peru. Based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Nobel Prize winning author Mario Vargas Llosa, the play has been adapted for the stage by OBIE award-winning playwright Caridad Svich.
