Violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, the 2011–12 Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-inResidence, returns to the New York Philharmonic with an all-Brahms chamber concert featuring Music Director Alan Gilbert on viola and Philharmonic musicians, Sunday, January 22, at 3:00 p.m. A few days later he will play Beethoven's Violin Concerto with the full orchestra, led by Mr. Gilbert, on a program with Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements and Ravel's Daphnis and Chloé, Suite No. 2, Thursday, January 26, at 7:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, January 27–28, at 8:00 p.m. Mr. Zimmermann will also perform the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Philharmonic on the EUROPE /WINTER 2012 tour, in Cologne, Paris, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam in February.

Joining Mr. Zimmermann for the Brahms chamber concert will be guest pianist Enrico Pace, Philharmonic Principal Associate Concertmaster Sheryl Staples, PrincipAl Viola Cynthia Phelps and Music Director Alan Gilbert, also on viola, Principal Cello Carter Brey, Associate Principal Cello Eileen Moon, and Principal Horn Philip Myers. On the program: the Scherzo for Violin and Piano (from FAE Sonata); Trio for Violin, Horn, and Piano, in E-flat major, Op. 40; and the String Sextet No. 1. The orchestral program will be released April 17, 2012, as part of Alan Gilbert and the
New York Philharmonic 2011–12 Season recording series.

In speaking about the upcoming concerts, Frank Peter Zimmermann, noted that the Brahms pieces "are very early works - a little different Brahms," and admitted that the concert will also provide him the opportunity for a personal first: "I've never played sextets before in my life! Normally, I play string trios. As a soloist, there are so many things with orchestra and recitals with piano. It's rare that you play string sextet." As for playing Beethoven in the orchestral concert, Mr. Zimmermann says: "As a violinist it's the greatest thing in life to play the Beethoven Violin Concerto. I never get sick of it, even if I have to play it every night!"
