Concrete Timbre & AWCANYC Present ANATHEMAS Salon Concert

On the anniversary of the historic Women's Marches in New York City, Washington, and around the world, we present 25 very short (1-4 minutes long) compositions inspired by the seven banned words: diversity, entitlement, evidence-based, fetus, science-based, transgender, and vulnerable.

In mid-December 2017, The Washington Post reported that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were told that the seven words were forbidden. Outrage spread on social media and Ann Warren posted a short statement on Facebook suggesting using the seven words as inspiration for a new composition. Several composers responded that they, "were in" and musicians Aleksandra Miglowiec (Flute), Rose Kow Xiu Yi (Violin), and Jasper Davis (Bass Trombone) immediately committed to perform along with Darold Cuba (Actor) and Johari Mayfield (Actor/Dancer). A call for compositions went out and composers from around the world responded and this Anathemas salon became a reality.

Composers and creators from New York City, Kentucky, New Jersey, Florida, Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Italy, Japan, Korea, and the United Kingdom joined to create 25 brand new compositions. Collectively we are stepping up to say, "We are not invisible, we are not powerless, we make a difference."

Anathemas features 25 short (1-4 minutes long) compositions in original music, poetry, dance, video, and text, composed by: Ana Paola Santillán Alcocer, Rodrigo S. Batalha, Tom Blatt, Darold Cuba, Eddie Emma DeGrand, Jacob Elkin, Angelica Faria, Bianca Rezende, Héctor Oltra García, Jesse Glass, Tim Goplerud, Stephanie Greig, Jin Hee Han, Marie Incontrera, Simon Le Boggit, Peri Mauer, Johari Mayfield, Robert Morton, Cullyn Murphy, Josh Oxford, Ben Spatz, Anna Terzaroli, and Ann Warren. Running time is approximately 80 minutes. A reception with audience and artists follows the salon concert.

Tickets are pay what you can at the door. Suggested donation is $10.

Concrete Timbre

We are working composers intertwining fascinating stories, movement, visuals, and media with our live contemporary music. Concrete Timbre affiliated composers and artists strive to develop art by working outside the comfort zone to create challenging new compositions. We strive to blur the boundaries of the performing and visual arts to add bold interdisciplinary performances to the contemporary music canon. A big part of the Concrete Timbre mission is to be a part of making live original concert music survive and flourish in an increasingly digital world.

AWCANYC

AWCANYC is a composers' cooperative founded by Jin Hee Han. Composers represent diverse ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds. It thrives through the active participation of its members working on individual projects to empower composers to create change in their communities through music, allowing them to share their stories.
