Playwrights Horizons (Tim Sanford, Artistic Director; Leslie Marcus, Managing Director) has announced an extension of its World Premiere production of A SMALL FIRE, a new play by Obie Award winner Adam Bock. Originally set to play a limited engagement through Sunday, January 23, the production will now extend one week through Sunday, January 30 at Playwrights Horizons' Mainstage Theater (416 West 42nd Street). The additional week represents the only extension possible.

"Directed with becoming delicacy" (The New York Times) by Trip Cullman, the production began previews Thursday, December 16 and had its official opening on Thursday, January 6.

Charles Isherwood of The New York Times named A SMALL FIRE a Critics' Pick, calling it "A theatrical combo plate that proves unusually satisfying. Quietly moving...raucous, funny and unexpectedly touching. Life's darkest terrors and most visceral delights both play a role. Featuring performances by reliable stage veterans Michele Pawk and Reed Birney, It's hard to keep from getting appropriately teary." Adam Feldman of Time Out-New York raved, "Bock's distinctive, affecting play has a steady burn that grows into palpable heat, and shoots sparks that still smolder in your head days later." Jennifer Farrar for Associated Press called it "An intriguing new play in a well-acted, intense production at Playwrights Horizons" and Thom Geier in Entertainment Weekly called it an "Ambitious, emotional play." Veteran critic John Simon called the play, "Extraordinarily moving. In 80 minutes, A SMALL FIRE is able to say a great deal and move us to the marrow."

The "beautifully acted" (Time Out-New York) production features three-time Obie Award and Drama Desk Award winner Reed Birney, Tony Award nominee and Drama Desk winner Celia Keenan-Bolger, Tony Award winner Michele Pawk and NAACP Image Award nominee Victor Williams.

When a tough-as-nails contractor (Ms. Pawk) finds her senses slipping on the brink of her daughter's (Ms. Keenan-Bolger) wedding, the impact on her family is nothing less than seismic. A SMALL FIRE is a human parable in which unexpected loss leads to an unlikely love story.

The production features scenic design by Loy Arcenas, costume design by Ilona Somogyi, lighting design by David Weiner and original music and sound design by Robert Kaplowitz. Production Stage Manager is Lori Ann Zepp.

The performance schedule for A SMALL FIRE is Tuesdays at 7PM, Wednesdays through Fridays at 8PM, Saturdays at 2:30 PM & 8PM and Sundays at 2:30 PM & 7:30 PM. Single tickets, $70, may be purchased online via www.TicketCentral.com, by phone at (212) 279-4200 (Noon-8pm daily), or in person at the Ticket Central Box Office, 416 West 42nd Street (between Ninth & Tenth Avenues).
