This fall, the sexy, soulful new musical comedy DIAL 'N' FOR NEGRESS will have its world premiere engagement for 16 performances only -- Thursday, September 10 through Saturday, September 26, 2009 -- at the Clurman Theatre on Theatre Row (410 W. 42nd St., NYC). Opening Night is Friday, September 11.
Created by the team responsible for the 2005 NYIT Award winning musical comedy It's Karate, Kid! The Musical (Best Musical and Best Choreography), DIAL 'N' FOR NEGRESS features book and lyrics by Travis Kramer, music by Tom Oster and Kevin Smith Kirkwood, and is based on an original concept by Kirkwood and Kramer. The production is choreographed by Jennifer L. Mudge, and produced and directed by Jake Hirzel. It's 1974 in Soulsville, USA. An apathetic community lives from fix-to-fix, and pimps, thugs and crooked cops rule the streets. Fresh from jail, the Negress arrives home and has to choose: turn away from the corrosive street life of Soulsville or accept his destiny as the unlikely hero of the community? Outrageous, hilarious, inspiring and driven with kinetic song and dance, DIAL 'N' FOR NEGRESS features an original 16-song funk "blaxploitation" score, including "Pimp Knowledge," "Break That Negress," "Dig It (Can You?)" and "Walk On (Ah'm a Negress Man)."Photo Credit: Carol Rosegg
