Horizon Theatre Rep to Present NY Premiere of CALIGULA at the Kirk Theatre

By:

Horizon Theatre Rep presents the New York premiere of David Greig's celebrated translation of Albert Camus' classic drama CALIGULA -- with previews to begin December 4, prior to an official press opening December 7, at Theatre Row's Kirk Theatre (410 West 42nd Street) in Manhattan. Rafael De Mussa will direct.

This production of CALIGULA is set in an unspecified country during the 20th century, where the charismatic leader Caligula is given absolute freedom to challenge social convention in pursuit of personal obsession. Following the death of his beloved sister, Emperor Caligula deserts his people and honored position for three days and three nights. He returns with a single objective: to understand the meaning of life.

Scottish playwright David Greig's translation of CALIGULA had its world premiere to great acclaim at London's Donmar Warehouse, followed by subsequent worldwide productions, including noted stagings at the Dublin Theatre Festival and in Washington, D.C., and will have its New York premiere with this production by Horizon Theatre Rep. This past summer, Mr. Greig wrote the translation for Lincoln Center's well-received production of Euripides' THE BACCHAE, starring Alan Cumming.

Horizon Theatre Rep is best known for its acclaimed revival of Jean-Paul Sartre's MEN WITHOUT SHADOWS, which in his New York Times review, Wilborn Hampton called "timely and commendable," and Backstage proclaimed as "Powerful!"

Directed by Rafael De Mussa, the cast of CALIGULA includes: Gustav Bodor, Jeff Campanella, Rafael De Mussa, Ben Gougeon, Israel Gutierrez, Quester D. Hannah, Tabetha Lorina-Baker, Romy Nordlinger, Chris Triana, Jordan Turchin, Miles Warner and Brandon Wood.

CALIGULA features set design by Peter R. Feuchtwanger, costume design by Jennifer Nweke, lighting design by Jeff Croiter, fight direction by Rick Sordelet, and sound design by Michael J. Whalen.

Albert Camus was born in Algeria on November 7, 1913. He earned a worldwide reputation as a novelist and essayist and won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1957. Through his writings, and in some measure against his will, he became the leading moral voice of his generation during the 1950s. At the height of his fame, Camus was killed in a car crash near Paris in 1960.

Horizon Theatre Rep (HTR), now in its seventh year, is dedicated to producing work from the international repertory. HTR aims to give emerging and established artists the opportunity to take risks, to excel, and to make their mark. Past productions include its acclaimed production of Jean-Paul Sartre's MEN WITHOUT SHADOWS, the first version of VASSA ZHELEZNOVA by Maxim Gorky featuring a new translation; the English language premieres of Armand Salacrou's NIGHTS OF WRATH,  3xPIRANDELLO at The New York International Fringe Festival and Dejan Dukovski's POWDER KEG.

Performances of CALIGULA run December 4-30 at Theatre Row's Kirk Theatre (410 West 42nd Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues): Thursdays-Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 3pm; with additional 8pm performances on Mondays, December 22 and 29, and Tuesdays, December 23 and 30; and the following exceptions: no performances December 25-28. Tickets are $18, available online at TicketCentral.com, by phone at 212-279-4200, or at the Theatre Row box office.
