GOOD PERSON OF SZECHWAN Reopens at The Public in October
The Foundry Theatre has announced that its critically acclaimed production of Bertolt Brecht's Good Person of Szechwan will reopen this fall as part of The Public Theater's 2013-14 season. The Public's five-week run of the show, October 18 - November 24, will reunite the entire original cast and creative team-including director Lear deBessonet, Taylor Mac as Shen Tei / Shui Ta, and César Alvarez and the band The Lisps-from the sold-out La MaMa presentation in February 2013. Tickets will go on sale later this year.
Can we practice goodness and create a world to sustain it? In this comic and complex play, one of Brecht's most entertaining characters, Shen Tei, the good-hearted, penniless, cross-dressing prostitute, is forced to disguise herself as a savvy businessman named Shui Ta to master the ruthlessness necessary to be a "good person" in a cruel world of limited resources.
In addition to Mac, the cast includes Lisa Kron (Mrs. Mi Tzu / Mrs. Yang); David Turner (Wang, the Waterseller / Waiter); Vinie Burrows, Annie Golden and Mia Katigbak (Gods); Kate Benson (Mrs. Shin); Ephraim Birney (the Nephew); Clifton Duncan (Grandfather / Yang Sun); Jack Allen Greenfield (Boy / Priest / Carpenter's Son); Brooke Ishibashi (the Woman); Paul Juhn (the Man / Mr. Shu Fu); and Darryl Winslow (Carpenter / Policeman / Unemployed Man).
The creative team includes Anne Erbe (Dramaturg), Tyler Micoleau (Lighting Designer), Clint Ramos (Costume Designer), Matt Saunders (Set Designer) and Brandon Wolcott (Sound Designer). The Foundry Theatre production uses John Willett's translation of the play.
Melanie Joseph, The Foundry's Artistic Producer said, "We're so delighted for the continued life of this production, and truly grateful to the good people at The Public Theater for making it happen."
Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis remarked, "This is one of the greatest American Brecht productions I have ever seen, and I am thrilled The Public can offer it a future life. The Foundry has been one of New York's essential theaters for almost 20 years, progressive and innovative and living on the cutting edge of performance, politics and morality. We at The Public are proud to partner with them again."
