The Grampus set sail for a three year whaling expedition in October of 1826. After a brutal storm in the North Atlantic, rations ran out and there was a violent mutiny on board. The Grampus went adrift and the ravenous crew was never heard from again. There were thought to be no survivors. Until tonight…
“Pirates of The Caribbean” meets “Moby Dick” meets “Beetlejuice”.
CHARACTERS
Silas— (M) 30-50 The local constable who’s willing to defend the seaport’s law and order at any cost. A former whaler injured at sea decades ago and now walks with a limp. He is not sure what’s going on in town tonight, but will not give up his town without a fight. Knows he is in way over his way head and enlists the audience to collect evidence and save the seaport. *Skilled Actor-Combatant.
Calliope— (F) 20-40 A mysterious, volatile (and definitely not human) siren captured from the South Pacific with a haunting voice and enchanting demeanor. She’s not to be trifled with. Her beauty is intoxicating and her voice can render grown men blind. She breaks free and uses her powers to feed the immortal Leviathan lurking below the deck of The Grampus. *An ethereal, effortless, mesmerizing Soprano singing voice.
Captain Barnard— (M) 40-60 The disgraced captain of The Grampus who has been hurt in a bloody fight to maintain control of his whaling ship, fighting off his own mutinous crew. Notoriously driven by profit and willing to sacrifice his men to bring down a whale. Once-notorious for his strict and violent onboard discipline, he’s left paranoid and haunted.
Seymour— (M) 25-45 The ship’s wild-eyed lookout and P.T. Barnum of the crew. A somewhat bipolar storyteller of outrageous tales that are probably not true. He keeps an elaborate collection below deck— a menagerie of treasures, both living and dead. Part of the violent mutiny, but in love with his most cherished treasure who renders him blind in a fit of rage.
Maggie— (F) 25-45 A local tavern owner (of the living) who is always lusting after the violent, crazed ghost whalers in town (whom she finds irresistible). Determined to lock one down as her forever husband. Armed with a bawdy sense of humor and always down for a impromptu song, dance, fight, or roll in the hay. Doesn’t need a bouncer or a gun at her tavern.
Chowdah— (M) 25-45 The ship’s cook and resident comedian from Boston with a wicked heavy accent. Better at roasting his fellow crewmates than roasting anything edible for dinner. Gets his name for notoriously for getting creative when food is scarce… (no one really knows what’s in his signature “chowder”— but it’s most likely not clams)
Rogers— (F) 25- 45 A skilled female blacksmith on the ship whose tongue is as sharp as her sword. Hot-tempered, salty, and sarcastic, but graceful in a swashbuckling duel. She knows she is bad luck to have onboard, but can hold her own with any of the boys. An opportunistic and violent mutineer who knows there’s a target on her back who feels she’s been shorted. *Skilled Actor-Combatant.
Greeley— (M) 25-45 The ship’s harpooner who could land a first throw while steering the whaling boat with his other hand. Irish, hot-tempered, tattooed, intimidating, and can handle a weapon. A wild storyteller who claims he’s fought a Kraken and several other sea monsters. Leader of the violent mutiny against the captain 200 years ago after the storm. *Skilled Actor-Combatant.
Parker— (M) 20-40 The Second Mate who has many stories of the glories and atrocities he has witnessed over the past 200 years, leading the whale boats. Battled the infamous Sea Serpent of Gloucester while a sailor in the US Navy (then left to become a rogue whaler). Power hungry with ulterior. More polished than Greeley but very involved in the mutiny. *Skilled Actor-Combatant.
