Casting: Please note that all ethnicities and genders are encouraged to audition for all parts of the play. Please prepare a 2-minute monologue. There will be cold readings from the script.

Setting The Scene: From 1692 through 1693, the famous Salem Witch Trials which accused over 200 people of witchcraft with 30 people found guilty (14 women and 5 men were hung). The hysteria began in the home of Reverend Parris and spread throughout the countryside.

ALL ROLES AVAILABLE

FEMALE

Betty Parris: A young girl afflicted with evil spirits, daughter of Reverend Parris.

Abigail Williams: A young woman, niece of Reverend Parris and former servant of the Proctor household. She is a haunted, conniving young woman who must survive.

Mercy Lewis: A young woman who is servant to the Putman’s. She is severe and merciless.

Mary Warren: A young woman who is naïve and lonely. Servant to the Proctor’s

Susanna Walcott: A young nervous, hurried woman. Doctor Gigg’s employee.

Tituba: Any age. She is a slave of Reverend Parris. Mixed race and indigenous.

Sarah Good: Older woman, the first to be accused of witchcraft.

Mrs. Ann Putman: 30’s to 50’s. A grief-stricken woman who is haunted by the deaths of all but one child. Her 8th child has fallen ill.

Rebecca Nurse: 60s or 70s. A gentle, honorable, Christian woman.

Elizabeth Proctor: 30’s or 40’s woman who is honest, loyal and tolerant but betrayed by the actions of her husband.

MEN

Reverend Parris: Vain and prideful. A leader of his community and a protector to his daughter.

Thomas Putman: 50’s. A vindictive, ambitious landowner who is out for more land grabs as the trials proceed. Husband to Ann Putman.

Francis Nurse: 70’s. A reputable, honorable landowner. Husband to Rebecca Nurse.

John Proctor: 40’s. Elizabeth’s husband. A minor landowner and an adulterer.

Giles Corey: 60’s or 70’s. A minor landowner and John Proctor’s friend.

Reverend John Hale: Any age. A confident, righteous and self-assured minister.

Deputy-Governor Danforth: Older. An unyielding politician jailing and executing suspects during the trials, despite proof of being innocent.

Judge Hathorne: Older. A fanatical judge. Believes wholeheartedly in the power of government and is unwilling to bend his beliefs.

Ezekiel Cheever: Any age. A dutiful clerk serving warrants to the accused.

John Willard: Any age. A drunken and disillusioned jailer.

Hopkins: Any age. Another jailer and/or marshal.
