INSTRUCTIONS

Prepare 32-bars of a song in the style of the show. See character descriptions for specifics, but think 70’s Rock/Funk, i.e. Santana, Ann Wilson (Heart), Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen, Sly & the Family Stone, The Eagles, etc. Songs from the era that show range/unique vocal quality and tell a story are highly encouraged. The music from the show has a lot of freedom built into it, so powerful virtuosic singers who get the references are going to be more interesting than tin types. Please slate in your audition and include - name, pronouns, union affiliation (if any), current location and if you're available to be a local hire to the San Diego area. Please send your audition by private YouTube or Vimeo link ONLY. If you also receive an EcoCast invitation, please use that platform.

BREAKDOWN

NOTE FROM CREATIVE: Based on the 2008 movie “Bottle Shock” starring Bill Pullman, Alan Rickman & Chris Pine, it is 1976. Before Napa was synonymous with wine. Jim Barrett's new winery is struggling, and he's got a troubled relationship with his 20s-something son, Bo. Meanwhile aspiring Mexican-American winemaker Gustavo, and UC Davis Enology grad student Samantha, chart their own course against discrimination and the odds. When stuffy English sommelier Spurrier shows up looking for contenders for his “Judgment of Paris -- a blind wine tasting competition -- everyone's skeptical. At the urging of Bo, Samantha, and Gus, Jim's Chardonnay is included, and when it unexpectedly beats the French, their little valley and the world of wine will never be the same.

[GUSTAVO BRAMBILA] 25 to 35 years old, Mexican-American Male Identifying Character. Assistant winemaker at CHATEAU MONTELENA, passionate and dedicated winemaker. Rock tenor, Santana meets Steve Perry. Especially interested in seeing Chicano/Mexican American actors for this role.

[BO BARRETT] 23 to 28 years old, all ethnicities, male-identifying character. Jim's son, classic Northern California dude, bit of a screw-up to start, definitely more concerned with having a good time than wine. Younger rock bari-tenor with high mix or falsetto, the range of Lou Gramm (Foreigner) with the laid-backness of Tom Petty.

[JO FAGNANI] 35 to 50 years old, female-identifying BIPOC character. Proprietor of the local dive JOE'S BAR, who serves up whiskey, wisdom and attitude in equal measure. Edgy Blues/Funk belter. In the vein of Janis, Tina, or Stevie with an underlying Sly and the Family Stone vibe.

[ENSEMBLE] 25 to 50 years old, all types to play multiple Ensemble roles including [Mike Grgich] head winemaker at Chateau Motelena, gregarious Croatian always in a black beret (slight accent); {BIG D (DWAYNE) big guys looking for trouble at Joe’s Bar; [BIKER GAL] a local at Joe’s Bar; [TWA COUNTER ATTENDANT] at the Napa Valley Airport Shuttle counter; [WINEMAKERS] various small batch valley producers; [AMERICAN TOURISTS] on their way to Paris via the Airport shuttle; [MARGE] 30s-40s, Secretary at Jim’s former Law Firm in San Francisco; [Operator’s Voice] on a payphone call from Joe’s Bar. The Ensemble will also play Esteemed Judges of the Judgment of Paris: PIERRE BREJOUX, ODETTE KAHN, CHRISTIAN VANNEQUE and PIERRE TARI

Additional Notes

Critical to CCAE Theatricals core values is an institutional culture of dignity, trust, and mutual respect. In every decision we make, we strive to uphold the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and to facilitate artistic excellence and risk.

The character descriptions above are written as they are identified in the script and in collaboration with the creative team.

1) We list race/ethnicity when specific to the character as written by the playwright, but are otherwise actively seeking all races and ethnicities.

2) We recognize that most characters are written on the gender binary, and so we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles with whom they most identify.

3) As an ADA compliant theatre, we welcome performers of all abilities and will make all possible and reasonable accommodations to cast performers in any role possible.

4) We recognize that no community is homogenous and identity is complex. To that end, the above three guidelines were written with our intention of intersectionality, and are meant to be viewed holistically.

Overall, we seek to cast our productions as expansively, inclusively, and mindfully as possible. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns, and if there are any accommodations we can provide.
