GALA Hispanic Theatre is looking for artists for its world premiere of the musical Aguardiente: Soul of the Caribbean, with book, direction, and choreography by Luis Salgado (Puerto Rico), and music by Daniel Gutiérrez (Colombia).
In this exciting new bilingual musical, presented April 30 - May 31, 2026 in Washington, DC, two immigrant writers from Colombia and Puerto Rico, who are living in New York City, journey back to their childhoods to reconnect with the?rich Caribbean culture. The production draws inspiration from traditional Caribbean rhythms, cumbia, bomba, currulao, and the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN | DESCRIPCIÓN DE LOS PERSONAJES
ALBERTO (Real World): 35, Latine writer. Commissioned to create a new book musical while facing a midlife existential crisis. Best friend of Alejandro. Torn between responsibility and artistic freedom.
ALEJANDRO (Real World): 28, Latine musician. A brilliant player of great Latin music. He has no prior theatre experience but has the fearless heart of a lion. Represents courage and raw talent entering a new world.
KIARA (Real World): 24, best friend to Alberto and Alejandro. She runs their social media out of loyalty and love. The “chosen family” member, witty and comedic relief. Also plays BETA (Z’s assistant). Secretly in love with Anis, and understudies both Kiara and Anis.
ABUELO (Real & Spirit): The universal spirit of the elderly. Sometimes it appears to be real, sometimes mythical. Embodies memory, wisdom, and connection. Manifestations: El Río (river) and El Circo (circus).
ANIS (Fictional World): Female-presenting Caribbean figure. Innocent, magical, and full of untapped potential. Represents the collective hopes of Colombian and Puerto Rican heritage.
AZUQUITA (Fictional World): Male, Afro-Caribbean “Romeo.” Passionate, playful, and devoted. Represents the burning dreams of humble communities blending Colombian and Puerto Rican rhythms.
PEPE (Also Circo MC): Latine producer, male or female. A gatekeeper who controls opportunities but also provides creative space. Doubles as the vibrant, theatrical ringmaster of the circus.
MAMÁ: Alberto’s real-world mother who also embodies Anis’s mother in the fictional realm. Represents the grounding force of family and generational continuity.
EVE / Z: American producer. In the real world, Eve embodies capitalism and the constant chase for financial gain. In the fictional space, she transforms into Z, a power player who only offers opportunities if revenue follows. She is a love conflict and symbol of temptation.
