BWW Previews: CATCH ME IF YOU CAN at Off Broadway Papakura Auckland
The musical adaptation of the Leonardo DiCaprio film Catch Me If You Can will be entertaining Auckland audiences from 15th-29th July.
Originally it was a story, then movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, then in 2011 the writers of Hairspray made it into a Tony award-winning musical. The show tells the story of Frank Abagnale Jr, who posed as a doctor, lawyer and co-pilot for a major airline and the chase that he led the FBI on for over two years before he was captured.
Frank Abagnale himself wrote to Papakura Theatre Company thanking them for obtaining the rights to perform his story. Theatre Company President Robert Mitchell said it gave the cast quite a thrill to receive it and they felt compelled to honour his story with integrity.
There's a ton of talent in this show. From George Everts who plays the challenging role of Frank Jnr with a style that will have audiences spellbound, to Anthony Mitchell who is stunning in the role of Hanratty; a characterisation of some of the FBI agents who tracked down Frank, to the beautiful songstress Lauryn Edmonds who plays Abganale's love interest Brenda.
It doesn't stop there however. Abagnale's parents played by Sharon Hewlett and Bradley Pope will intrigue.
There are also the comedic performances of Roger and Carol Strong, Brenda's parents played by Donna Botha and Kane Welsh.
The ensemble is full of top talent also. The singing is jazz style and the choreography is full on and expertly delivered.
If this wasn't enough there's a 12 piece band who are expertly incorporated into the monochromatic set reflective of the 1960's.
Catch Me If You Can has something for everyone. You're guaranteed a top night out!
