Nominated for over 46 film awards (with 6 wins) over the past year including the Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature, The Breadwinner opens this Friday at The Park Theatre's River Street Theatre (RST) in Jaffrey.

Parvana is an 11-year-old girl growing up under the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. When her father is wrongfully arrested, Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy in order to support her family. Working alongside her friend Shauzia, Parvana discovers a new world of freedom-and danger. With undaunted courage, Parvana draws strength from the fantastical stories she invents, as she embarks on a quest to find her father and reunite her family. Equal parts thrilling and enchanting, The Breadwinner is an inspiring and luminously animated tale about the power of stories to sustain hope and carry us through dark times.

The Breadwinner is written and directed by Nora Twomey (The Secret of Kells) and written by Anita Doron (The Lesser Blessed, The End of Silence).

The Breadwinner is an entertaining, moving and thought provoking film for families. One parent on CommonSenseMedia.org remarked, "This story is great for young girls in the developed world. It teaches them that no matter how bad they think they have it, others have it worse. It also shows that women around the world still need support to gain the natural human rights they deserve and can help young women to be socially active in women's rights."

RottenTomatoes.com gives The Breadwinner a 94% FRESH score. The Los Angeles Times summarizes the film, "The Breadwinner reminds us yet again that the best of animation takes us anywhere at any time and makes us believe."

The Breadwinner plays at the RST Friday and Saturday, March 16 & 17, both at 7pm. There is also a matinee on Sunday, March, 18 at 2pm.

Tickets for The Breadwinner (Rated PG-13) are $8.00. Seniors, military, students, teachers are $7.00. More program and schedule information, as well as ticket purchases, can be found at riverst.org or by calling the RST Box Office (603) 532-8888.
