Peterborough Players Screen THE ELIXIR OF LOVE Today, 10/13

Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore (The Elixir of Love) will kick off this season's The Met: Live in HD opera series at the Peterborough Players today, Oct. 13th at 1:00 pm.

Anna Netrebko and Matthew Polenzani star as Adina and Nemorino, two villagers who form an unlikely romance with the help of a mysterious "elixir of love" that bears a suspicious resemblance to French wine. Donizetti's comedy, a staple of the repertory at opera houses around the world, features one of the most famous tenor arias in history, "Una furtiva lagrima." The opera co-stars Mariusz Kwiecien as Adina's swaggering fiancé, the soldier Belcore, and Ambrogio Maestri as the potion-peddling traveling salesman Doctor Dulcamara.

Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher (South Pacific on Broadway) has created a new production for the opera that explores the depth of feeling between the characters and is set in mid-19th-century Italy, the time and place of the opera's composition.

Opera lovers and the opera 'curious' alike can enjoy experiencing The Metropolitan Opera of New York City, streamed live onto The Players' big screen in the intimacy of The Players' 250-seat theatre. Savory and sweet 'Opera Bites,' catered by Sunflowers Restaurant and Catering, are sold before each opera and during intermissions.
