Roxy Theatre Part of Nationwide Network of Companies to do 'The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later'
Clarksville's Roxy Theatre will be one of some 100 theatres across the United States to produce a staged reading of The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later on Monday, October 12. The landmark event, which commemorates the 11th anniversary of the death of Matthew Shepard, the openly gay University of Wyoming student who was brutally beaten and killed ina homophobic hate crime.
In 1999, a team of playwrights from the Tectonic Theatre Project created The Laramie Project to explore the events leading up to, and the reactions following, the death of Shepard in 1998.
The Tectonic Theatre Project used hundreds of interviews, news reports and company members' journal entries to create the Laramie Project. For a decade, the play has provided an intimate perspective on the life of Shepard, and the lives and attitudes of his community. Ten years later, the group revisited the community of Laramie and created a new work to reflect on the ten years that have passed since Shepard's murder.
The Roxy's performance will be at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 suggested donation, and may be purchased online at www.roxyregionaltheatre.org, or by calling (931) 645-7699 during regular box office hours (9 a.m.-2p.m. Weekdays).
Actors Bridge Ensemble of Nashville will also take part in the nationwide event, with their performance at the W.O. Smith School of Music on October 12 at 7 p.m. Tickets to the Actors Bridge presentation are free, but reservations are required. To make reservations, email the company at info@actorsbridge.org.
