Review: Lyric Theatre Singers Present HELLO BROADWAY! at the D.B. Clarke Theatre

By:

The Lycric Theatre Singers captivated audiences with their opening night, spring show Hello Broadway! at the D.B. Clarke Theatre in Montreal, QC last night.

The Lyric Theatre Singers is a division of the musical theatre company The Lyric Theatre, a long-standing community organization, dedicated to presenting high quality, musical productions in the Montreal community since 1965. Founded by distinguished Musical Director Bob Bachelor, the Lyric Theatre Singers has risen to critical and community acclaim with playful ensemble interpretations of Broadway, Jazz and Pop songs and moving Christmas concerts.

This year's two-act, spring production Hello Broadway! involved 40 singers, 5 musicians and 34 songs from beloved musicals. These ranged from classics like Follies, Once Upon a Mattress, Gypsy, to more modern musicals like Thoroughly Modern Millie, Avenue Q and Hamilton.

Musical numbers included skilful staging, enjoyable choreography, talented soloists and even a little puppeteering. In short, this show provides all the elements for a fun-packed, entertaining evening.

Stage Directors and long-time collaborators Bob Bachelor and Cathy Burns have provided a seamless and enjoyable theatrical portrait, allowing each of the 40 singers to navigate songs and transitions with ease and grace. Guest Choreographer Jonathan Patterson choreographed a visually pleasing and downright hilarious version of Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen, Hello Love from A Chorus Line. The touching musical arrangement of We can Make It by Bob Bachelor and Chris Barillaro sparked thunderous applause and as always Musical Director Bob Bachelor has shaped a beautiful sound with this group of talented singers and musicians.

Despite some standout performances like Prince Dauntless the Drab played by Ben Corkett, Song of Love, Happily Ever After, The Circle of Life lead by David Chhiv and Suzanne Lamontagne and Will Fech pattering Ya Got Trouble, this group is at its strongest as an ensemble. The only unfortunate part of this experience, is knowing it will be over far too soon. The Lyric Theatre singers will only have three more performances at the D.B. Clarke Theatre so future patrons are strongly encouraged to get to the box office and get their tickets.
