While the First World War is raging, The Player, the new opera of the young Prokofiev is rehearsing in Petrograd. The revolution of 1917 broke out and the partition disappears along the Tsarist regime. The composer will put ten years to recover, it will make revisions, and his work as a battered white Russian, finally see the day in 1929 on the stage of La Monnaie in Brussels. We know that Prokofiev was particularly close to his player despite his thwarted gestation. It was for him to dust off the sort of Russian opera, then frozen in a theatrical droop of another age, based on the autobiography of a writer popular with the pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg intelligentsia years . Dostoevsky recounts his obsession with the game interspersed with his tormented love for Paulina Souslava. It is striking that in parallel with the Italian verismo and French naturalism, the Russian scene also fulfilled his transfer to a real theater, rich in meaning and this is great, perfectly in tune with public awareness of today.
