U-CAN and Northrop Present World Art Day Featuring Black Violin
Fri, Apr 14
1:30 pm - 10:00 pm Building-wide activites
7:30 pm Concert
Following its first-ever celebration at Northrop last year, this year's World Art Day will feature even more hands-on activities, collaborative art, and opportunities for students to perform and participate. Presented by University Collaborative Ambassadors for Northrop (U-CAN) and Northrop, the building will be brimming with activities encouraging and celebrating individual creative expression, with help from student groups including Tesla Works, Ivory Tower, Weavers Guild, MinnesoTap, academic departments, and various community organizations. All World Art Day activities are free, including a special performance by Black Violin on the Carlson Family Stage at 7:30 pm, with a student-designed light show on the plaza to follow.
An American hip-hop duo that was born from a high school friendship, Black Violin features Kev Marcus and Wil B, two classically trained instrumentalists. With Kev Marcus on the violin and Wil B. on the viola, the two combine the elegance of classical music with the funky fresh rhythms and beats of hip-hop. This harmony between the two contrasting genres has constructed Black Violin's distinctive style. This past year alone, Kev Marcus and Wil B. have played for nearly 100,000 students and over 125 public shows across the United States and Europe.
"Through the message of Black Violin's music, we've spent the last 10 years working to encourage and empower people of all ages, ethnic and socio economic backgrounds to find what connects us. We realize that every opportunity to connect our diverse fans is an opportunity to break down the barriers that separate us, empower individuality and encourage progress," said Wil B. and Kev Marcus about the UNITY tour.
Students are encouraged to either drop in for a bit or stay all day to enjoy the free snacks and activities that World Art Day will feature.
