The Soap Factory Presents COLLECTIVELY WE SUPPORT YOUR AUTONOMY Image

Monica Sheets: Collectively We Support Your Autonomy Monica is installing a large-scale neon sign created in collaboration with Ne-Art Custom Neon in Northeast Minneapolis on the Soap Factory's roof. The text - "collectively we support your autonomy" - is inspired by the participatory art projects she has previously initiated, offering a reflection of and comment on the relationships between artist, participant, artwork and audience.

According to Monica, "We can also see this relationship in The Soap Factory's role in the Twin Cities' art community. It is the support provided by organizations such as The Soap that enables artists' autonomy in exploring their varied interests and contributing their knowledge to the world. It is also our collective support of these organizations as artists, audience and volunteers that ensures their continued existence. It seems fitting to me to emphasize these reciprocal roles on The Soap Factory's exterior while its interior is closed in order to undertake renovations that ensure its own autonomy and continued existence."

The format and placement of the sign references other historic neon in the area, like the Pillsbury Flour or North Star Blanket signs, but rather than speaking to us as consumers, Monica's sign addresses us as human beings. The text speaks to our interdependence and responsibility to each other: it is the work of many people coming together, forming invisible structures of support that allows us each to function as self-determined individuals in the world. The sign reminds us of this reality, while also raising the question of how we live up to this ideal.

Monica Sheets is a fiscal year 2015 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

About the Artist

Monica Sheets creates platforms for communication as a means of civic engagement for herself and other participants. She was born in Toledo, Ohio and her experiences growing up in the Rust Belt were pivotal to her decision to work directly with participants, coming from a desire to reach audiences who might not normally visit galleries and museums. In addition to her artistic work, she has worked in different capacities at a variety of non-profit art organizations, including as founder and director of Das Fundbuero e.V., a cultural organization dedicated to creating spaces in which former East German citizens can discuss their experiences of the German Democratic Republic and the aftermath of German unification in 1989.

About Here & There

Monica Sheets: Collectively We Support Your Autonomy is one of several public projects being presented by The Soap Factory as a part of Here & There. Here & There is The Soap Factory's out-of-building programming during 2017 while the building undergoes renovation. Here & There includes a residency exchange program with Kultivera in Trånas, Sweden and Rethinking Public Spaces, public projects that will take place directly outside of The Soap Factory and around the state of Minnesota including locations such as; Rochester, Willmar, and Brainerd.
