Lex-Ham Community Theater Presents Lillian Hellman's DAYS TO COME, Now thru 10/27

By:

The Lex-Ham Community Theater presents Lillian Hellman's drama DAYS TO COME, in six performances tonight, October 19-27 at the Wellstone Center, located at 179 Robie Street East, St. Paul. The show is directed by John Townsend.

Set in the 1930s, DAYS TO COME tells the story of a labor strike in Ohio and the discord within a family-owned business as family members try to break the strike to preserve their business and their family. Hellman's ability to combine political themes with tales of personal struggle is evident in the play as she explores issues of union busting, social class, and questionable financial business practices which are still timely today.

Perhaps better known for her plays The Children's Hour and The Little Foxes, Lillian Hellman used her position as an author, dramatist, and screenwriter to work for political causes. Although Hellman herself maintained that she was not a political person, she remained a vocal figure in the US political arena throughout her life, including her notable defiance of the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1952 stating "I cannot and will not cut my conscience to fit this year's fashions." In the years since her death, Lillian Hellman has been the subject of numerous books, and her plays continue to be performed on stages across the country, her political and social sentiments finding renewed relevance and resonance with 21st century audiences.

Performances will be 7:30pm tonight, October 19 and October 20, 25, 26, and 27, and at 2:00pm Sunday, October 21 at the Wellstone Center, located at 179 Robie Street East, St. Paul.

There will be a presentation and discussion following the performance on Saturday, October 20 regarding the state of organized labor in the Twin Cities in the 1930s.

Tickets for the performances are $18 for adults, $12 for children, students, and seniors aged 65 and older. The 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 21 performance is 'pay what you want' for admission. In addition, special pricing is available for members of all local labor unions.

The production is sponsored, in part, with generous donations from AFSCME MN Council 5 and AFSCME Local 2864.

Lex-Ham Community Theater has been producing quality theatrical experiences for and by the residents of the Lexington-Hamline and surrounding neighborhoods in St. Paul since 1996.
