Williamston Theatre Receives Support from Verizon
The Williamston Theatre will be continuing its School Day Matinee program and will be able to provide free tickets to live theatre for area high school students thanks to a generous grant from the Verizon Foundation. The Theatre will be offering School Day Matinees for its upcoming production of Oedipus in February 2011.
The Theatre will be mounting an adaptation of Sophocles' classic Greek tragedy about providence and destiny written by Tony Caselli and Annie Martin. Oedipus journeys through life, attempting to outrun a foretold prophesy only to land right in the hands of fate. Four stellar actors bring the story to life as the intimate Williamston Theatre space is theatrically expanded to hold this epic and stunning tale of the ages.
"We're very excited to be continuing our School Day Matinee Program with this play," says Executive Director John Lepard. "Students will have a unique opportunity to see this classic tragedy come to life. It's the best way to learn about drama and storytelling." High school students from East Lansing, Mason and Williamston will be attending specially scheduled performances.
Since opening in June 2006, the Williamston Theatre has mounted twenty-five full, professional productions in its space at 122 South Putnam Street in downtown Williamston, including two world premieres and several Michigan premieres. Oedipus will run from January 27 - February 20, 2011. Information on the 2010-2011 Season, the Theatre's fifth in operation, is available on the Theatre's website at www.williamstontheatre.org or by calling the Theatre at (517) 655-7469.
