Pianist Murray Perahia has cancelled his spring tour, including his recital performance with the University Musical Society (UMS) scheduled for Sunday, April 22 at 4 pm at Hill Auditorium, due to illness.

UMS is pleased to announce that pianist Emanuel Ax has agreed to perform in his place for what will be the closing concert of UMS's 2017-18 season. The recital will take place on the same date and at the same time as the originally announced Perahia concert. UMS is working to identify a date when Mr. Perahia can return in the future.

Mr. Ax will perform Mozart's Sonata in F Major, Liszt's Three Sonnets of Petrarch, Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita No. 5 in G Major, and Beethoven's Andante favori in F Major and Sonata No. 21 in C Major ("Waldstein").

Ticketholders have been notified about the change and may use the originally issued tickets to gain admittance. For tickets or additional information, contact UMS at 734.764.2538 or online at ums.org. Tickets may also be purchased in person at the League Ticket Office (911 North University Avenue, Ann Arbor). UMS Ticket Office hours: Monday-Friday 9 am to 5 pm, Saturday 10 am - 1 pm, closed Sunday.

Emanuel Ax is a winner of the Young Concert Artist Award, Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition, Michaels Award, and the Avery Fisher Prize. A frequent and committed partner for chamber music, he has worked regularly with such artists as Young Uck Kim, Cho-Liang Lin, Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Peter Serkin, Jaime Laredo, and the late Isaac Stern. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and holds honorary doctorates of music from Yale and Columbia Universities.

This performance will mark Mr. Ax's seventh UMS appearance since his 1978 debut, but only his second solo recital. He has appeared in duo recitals with Yo-Yo Ma (1991) and Yefim Bronfman (2008), and as soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra (1995), the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra (1998), and the San Francisco Symphony (2012). His previous solo recital appearance was his UMS debut, 40 years ago.
