Gem Theatre Presents Jess Godwin

By:

Singer-songwriter and pianist Jess Godwin will debut her latest EP, Klutz, Friday, July 15, 2011 at Detroit's historic Gem Theatre. The self-proclaimed 'Misfit with Soul' will perform her unique style of R&B, pop and rock. The all-ages show opens at 8 p.m. with Corey Roberts. Tickets are on sale now!

Jess Godwin has been compared to Teena Marie, Regina Spektor and Norah Jones, but has a sound all her own. The Chicago Tribune calls her, "the voice of a songbird." A classically trained singer and pianist, Godwin blends her theatrical background, quirky demeanor and understated sense of humor for a rich performance of funny and honest storytelling.

Jess Godwin's catchy and melodic lyrics are crafted to resonate with her audience. She sings about bad dates, relationships, and how the grass is greener. Her third and latest album, Klutz, features Katy's Side a tongue-in-cheek narrative - and new music video - about the perils of all-consuming female jealously. Godwin is highlighted as the song's underdog: "Katy's side is a carousel. She's got her cards and she plays them well. She never wants for more because her life is a dream. It's sweet enough to make me sick," she sings.

Godwin studied classical music at Vanderbilt University and obtained a degree in theater from Columbia College, Chicago. As an actor, she has performed at numerous theatres, including the Steppenwolf Theatre (Chicago), Porchlight Theatre (Chicago), and the Long Wharf Theatre (New Haven, Connecticut). Godwin's three albums, Klutz, Quiet the Room and To The Heart of It are available on iTunes.

Corey Roberts, a Michigan native and a recent graduate from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in Voice Performance, will open the show. Roberts is a seasoned performer at 22 - whose talent covers a wide range of genres, including jazz, opera and soul. Roberts' expressive and moving stage presence is as confident as it is charming. His smooth tenor allows him to serenade his listeners with controlled gusto and passion as observed in his delivery of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables. Whether he is performing solo or as part of duet, Roberts' rendition of The Song That Goes Like This from Spamalot, exhibits his knack for smart comedic timing.
