The Vortex is honored to host the Albuquerque directorial debut of Joanne Camp Sobel, one of New Mexico's most accomplished actors, in a powerful new staging of Chekhov's classic The Seagull. The Russian master's first major play is set in the late 1900s at a lakeside country estate, where a group of famous and aspiring artists--among them a celebrated actress, her playwright son, and her novelist lover--have gathered for a visit. Beneath the amusing surface of the characters' animated chatter and unrequited love-triangles run deeper currents of self-doubt, artistic despair, and longing to achieve greatness. Like the seagull of the title, artists are fragile beings--able to soar high but also to be shot down in their precarious and competitive world. Sobel's production explores how much of themselves--and their loved ones--writers and actors have to surrender to satisfy their ambitions. The Seagull paints a vividly realistic picture of Russia's landowning class in decline, just prior to the social revolutions of the early 20th century.
