Theatre Memphis Taps Broadway Classic with Opening Night Fundraiser

Theatre Memphis Taps Broadway Classic with Opening Night Fundraiser Image42nd Street taps its way across the boards at Theatre Memphis on the Lohrey Stage June 8- July 1, 2018. Opening night will be a fundraising event, $100 per person (will include a show ticket), cocktail buffet, open bar, live auction and opportunities to participate in "prize pulls" that willinclude wine, jewelry and more.

The event will begin at 6pm with the performance starting at 8pm. In this staple of American musical theatre, star-struck Peggy Sawyer arrives in New York City from Allenstown, PA, hoping to become a Broadway star herself. Facing adversity, she learns about show business and discovers which relationships are most important in life. Between setbacks and growth as both a performer and a young woman, she conquers the city as the cast tap dances into your hearts with iconic musical numbers including "We're in the Money," "Lullaby of Broadway," "Shuffle Off to Buffalo," and the title song, "42nd Street."

"A classic like 42nd Street is the epitome of the Broadway image," says director Ann Marie Hall. Though patrons may have expectations, Hall likes to keep things fresh. "There is always a way to make something new ... I make sure the story comes through but I love looking for 'the twist.' After all, what could happen to a single girl all alone in the big city looking for romance and success ... in a musical?"

Theatre Memphis Executive Producer Debbie Litch gets excited talking about the 2017-18 season-closing musical. "This is one show where you just can't sit still when you're watching it," she giggles. "From the moment you recognize the songs, the second the dancers start moving ... it just absorbs you and you are in for the ride of your life. It is all so familiar and the cast is so polished. It is truly the intersection of our local talent and professional standards ... 42nd Street at 630 Perkins Extended!"
