On Sunday, December 11 at 6:00 PM, San Jose Taiko comes to The Orpheum Theatre for an electrifying evening filled with the power of the drums and the energy of the musicians who play them. Fusing the traditional rhythms of Japan with beats from around the world, these talented artists play on a stage full of drums, expressing the beauty and harmony of the human spirit through the voice of taiko.

Since 1973, San Jose Taiko has been mesmerizing audiences with the powerful, spellbinding, and propulsive sounds of the taiko. Japanese for “drum,” taiko has been used for centuries in Japanese culture, from giving battlefield commands to accompanying religious ceremonies and traditional celebrations. At San Jose Taiko, Japanese, African, Balinese, Latin, and even American rock and jazz merge to produce an innovative contemporary sound that transcends cultural boundaries.

As part of The Orpheum’s 2011-2012 Family Series, San Jose Taiko is one of five remaining productions gracing the lineup this season. The other shows are The Magic School Bus: LIVE! Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 11:00 AM & 6:00 PM, Locomotion Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 6:00 PM, Eric Carle’s Treasured Stories Friday, February 24, 2012 at 6:00 PM, and Romeo and Juliet Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 6:00 PM. The Orpheum’s 2011-2012 Family Series sponsored by Bank of America.
