The Liminal Playhouse Announces 2019-2020 Season - SMART PEOPLE, PUNTS, and More!

By: Mar. 10, 2019

Artistic Director Tony Prince and Producing Director Richard McGrew has announced the 2019 - 2020 season of The Liminal Playhouse, again consisting of four Louisville premieres.

The season will open with "The Exceptionals" by Bob Clyman. Set in a sperm bank in the near future, this play is a comedy about how far parents should, or are willing to, go in order to produce and raise children that are "exceptional." It will run from August 29 - September 8, 2019.

The second show will be "Haunting Julia" by Alan Ayckbourn. The father of a young female composer who has died of a possible suicide decides to turn her attic bedroom into a museum in her honor. Opening just in time for the Halloween season, this unsettling play explores the liminal space between life and death. When is it the right time to let go of the dead... and who decides? This literate and chilling play will run October 24 - November 3, 2019.

The third production will be "Punts" by Sarah Page. This 2017 British play explores the relationships between a husband and wife, their slightly mentally disabled twenty-five year old son and the prostitute they hire to help him lose his virginity. It will run March 26 - April 5, 2020.

The fifth season will close with "The Houseguests" by Harry Kondoleon, the playwright who wrote "Christmas on Mars," which opened The Liminal Playhouse's first season. John and Vera are "welcoming" Manny and Gale to their home as houseguests, but this will be a visit far from what anyone could ever expect. The Village Voice described the play's 1993 debut as "horrific, postmodern high comedy." The production dates will be May 28 - June 7, 2020.

Prince says, "We're really looking forward to continuing to produce thought-provoking plays that surprise, challenge and entertain our audiences."

All performances will be at The Henry Clay Theatre, 604 South Third Street, Louisville, KY.

Remaining productions for The Liminal Playhouse's current season are "Smart People" by Lydia R. Diamond (March 28 - April 7, 2019) and Edward Albee's "The Goat or, Who is Sylvia?" (May 30 - June 9, 2019) at The Henry Clay Theatre.

Student Blog: What I Wish I Knew...

Hello again, readers! I hope you all are well! Happy summer vacation, to those of you who have completed your spring semester of school! As I have just completed my first full year of being a college student, I wanted to take an opportunity to reflect on the things I wish I knew before college. For most, college is the first time “adulting,” if you will, and that comes with a learning curve. The struggles I discovered this year and worked towards solving aid in my understanding of what it is to live, as I continue to discover more.

Broadway Beyond Louisville Review: INTO THE WOODS at Tennessee Performing Arts Center

What did our critic think of INTO THE WOODS at Tennessee Performing Arts Center? The star-studded cast is led by Tony Award winner Stephanie J. Block and Sebastian Arcelus as The Baker’s Wife and the Baker respectively. They’re a real-life couple, so their chemistry is justly wonderful, but I cannot express how amazing their individual performances are as well.

Broadway Beyond Louisville Review: Broadway in Cincinnati presents MOULIN ROUGE! at the Aronoff Center

In 2001, Baz Luhrumann's film welcomed the world to the Moulin Rouge. The film is credited as part of the resurgence of movie musicals in the early 2000s, and continues to be an audience favorite. After whispers of a stage adaptation for years and years, the dream became a reality in 2018 with an out-of-town tryout in Boston.  Moulin Rouge finally opened on Broadway in the Summer of 2019, as an instant hit. That Broadway season was cut short in March of 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but when the season resumed in the Fall of 2021, it was nominated for 14 Tony Awards (winning 10, including best musical). The show finally embarked on its highly anticipated national tour in 2022.
