August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean unfolds in 1904, immersing audiences in a Black community grappling with their past and seeking redemption through the legendary slave ship of the same name. Central characters include Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old matriarch, Solly Two Kings, a former slave, and Citizen Barlow, a young man in search of a new life. Directed by Rovin Jay, this production features a seven-member cast, including returning actor Bob Baumsten and newcomers such as Daphne Jones and Asim Rashad. The play’s rich blend of naturalism and mysticism reflects the complexities of heritage and community.
