POWER! STOKELY CARMICHAEL Set for Hollywood Fringe Festival

By:
Power! Stokely Carmichael has been selected to be a part of the 2016 Hollywood Fringe Festival. In this blistering one-man show, you will be transported back to the summer of 1966 and encounter multiple characters that Stokely Carmichael encountered during the days of the Civil Rights Movement. The production is tense, funny, heartbreaking, informative, engaging and non-stop entertaining. Witness the resurrection of the leading voice of the Black Power Movement, Stokely Carmichael, in this most timely production.

The play takes an absurdist journey into the mind of revolutionary Stokely Carmichael. On June 23, 1966, an unknown protégé of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. named Stokely Carmichael prepared to engage in a standoff with state police during the March Against Fear in the city of Canton,Mississippi. While prepping the new marchers that arrived late Carmichael warns them that, "If you are out here for an exciting time, you need to go to the movies. People die out here." Those marchers during this production are the audience members. Prompted by the 2012 murder of Trayvon Martin and inspired by his time working as a corrections officer at a Florida maximum security prison, Meshaun Labrone wrote "POWER!" Stokely Carmichael.

Meshaun Labrone was a repertory theatre member of the Miami Theatre Center (2005- 2007) and has been in such plays as Two Trains Running (M Ensemble), Body and Sold (The Kennedy Center) and The Tin Soldier under the direction of former Moscow Art Theatre Director, Slava Dolgochev. He earned his BFA from Florida International University in Miami, 2005, a TEFL certificate in Prague, Czech Republic, 2006. In 2011, Mr. Meshaun received international recognition for his critically acclaimed One-Man show, Right to Remain... Tupac Shakur; performed at the Tara Theatre, Off-West End, London. In the play, Labrone explores Shakur's love of William Shakespeare and highlights the parallels between The Young Black Male and Richard III. With his performance, Labrone brought the classical theatre community and hip-hop community together to witness a truly groundbreaking production

After watching Jennifer Knight's performance in Kwaidan (Spooky Action Theater, Spring 2014), Mr. Labrone thought that she would be the ideal director to bring this show to life. He was immediately taken with Ms. Knight's ability to connect with the audience while handling a daring, non-traditional script. "POWER!" Stokely Carmichael is Ms. Knight's directorial debut.

Performances at The Hollywood Fringe Festival are listed below. Labrone continues on at the Capital Fringe in Washington D.C. in July and the New York International Fringe Festival in August.
