Musician Unions Local 802 And Local 47 Condemn Trump Criticism of Member Bruce Springsteen
The American Federation of Musicians Locals 802 and 47 have issued a joint statement in support of Bruce Springsteen following public criticism from Donald Trump.
Local 802 American Federation of Musicians President Dan Point and Local 47 AFM President Marc Sazer issued the following statement in response to recent public remarks by Donald Trump criticizing Bruce Springsteen over the musician’s political commentary.
Springsteen, a longtime union member affiliated with Local 47 (Los Angeles, CA) and Local 399 (Asbury Park, NJ), has recently spoken out on political and social issues, including describing the current political leadership as “corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous” during a recent concert appearance. Trump responded publicly on social media, calling Springsteen a “bad, and very boring singer” and a “total loser,” and encouraging supporters to boycott his concerts.
“We can not remain silent as one of our most celebrated members is singled out and personally attacked by the President of the United States,” the statement reads. “Bruce Springsteen is not just a brilliant musician, he is a voice for working people, a symbol of American resilience, and an inspiration to millions in this country and around the world. From Nebraska to Born to Run, his music has spoken truth to power for decades, and that is exactly what he is doing now. Musicians have the right to freedom of expression, and we stand in complete solidarity with Bruce and every member who uses their platform to speak their conscience. Local 802 and Local 47 will always defend that right.”
The statement comes amid an ongoing public exchange between the artist and the former president, reflecting broader tensions between political figures and entertainers who engage in public commentary.
AFM Local 802 represents thousands of highly skilled musicians who drive New York City’s cultural and tourism economy. Its members perform on Broadway, at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and Radio City Music Hall, as well as in recording studios, on television broadcasts, and in venues across the city. Through collective bargaining agreements, the union advocates for proper classification, fair treatment, and a living wage for its members.
