Meow Meow in Concert with Pink Martini's Thomas M. Lauderdale

UCLA's Center for the Art of Performance (CAP UCLA) presents international chanteuse extraordinaire Meow Meow in concert with Pink Martini pianist Thomas M. Lauderdale, featuring a century-spanning repertoire on Friday, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m.at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Single tickets are now available for $29.50-$69.50 online at cap.ucla.edu and theatre.acehotel.com, via AXS by phone at 888-929-7849 and in person at The Theatre at Ace Hotel box office.

At last! An evening of (almost) completely orchestrated CHAOS. Song siren and comedienne Meow Meow brings her glorious brand of subversive and sublime performance for her first major appearance in Los Angeles. Piano virtuoso Thomas M. Lauderdale, founder of cult orchestra Pink Martini, joins the spectacular crowd-surfing queen of song for an unforgettable evening of exquisite music and much mayhem.

"Kristy Edmunds, the founder of PICA, and now CAP UCLA visionary, forced Thomas and I together some years ago because she had 'a feeling' about the magic we might make together if we met," said Meow Meow. "It has been an art-love-affair ever since, spanning continents and sensibilities."

Prepare for Piazzolla tangos, Weill, Brecht, Brel, even Radiohead alongside original chansons by Meow and Lauderdale. With Bowie and Pina Bausch as curators of her work, Meow is an award-winning phenomenon, from Shanghai to the cabaret dives of Berlin, on London's glittering West End, to Lincoln Center NY, Sydney Opera House and last seen with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and at Shakespeare's Globe in London.

"Meow Meow is a torch singer who carries you through arcs in songs with comedic wit, politics and cultural commentary," said Kristy Edmunds, CAP UCLA executive and artistic director. "It's the kind of work that you could certainly bring a young teenager to, as well as your grandparents. She absolutely captivates the audience."

"The Australian chanteuse brilliantly embodies a new kind of performance art, one that's part cabaret and part Phyllis Diller with a bit of Piaf thrown in," raved The New Yorker in naming Meow Meow one of the "Top Performers of the Year." Hailed as "sensational" (The Times), a "diva of the highest order" (New York Post) and "The Queen of Chanson" (Berliner Zeitung), she "erases boundaries between cultures and languages," (The New York Times).

Thomas M. Lauderdale, founder and artistic director of beloved Portland-based Pink Martini, returns to Los Angeles following performances with the band last fall at The Theater at Ace Hotel in November and the Hollywood Bowl in August.

Meow Meow's U.S. West Coast tour kicks off at the San Francisco Symphony's Davies Hall on Jan. 27 and the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert on Jan. 31, before arriving at CAP UCLA at The Theatre at Ace Hotel on Feb. 2.

CAP UCLA's upcoming music programs include Alarm Will Sound: 1969 (Jan. 27, Royce Hall), Goapele (Feb. 10, The Theatre at Ace Hotel), Antonio Sanchez: BiRDMAN LiVE Film + Live Drum Score (Feb. 16, Royce Hall), Antonio Sanchez & Migration (Feb. 17, The Theatre at Ace Hotel), Abdullah Ibrahim & Ekaya in Tribute to The Jazz Epistles (March 3, Royce Hall), Kronos Quartet, Rinde Eckert and Vân-Ánh Võ: My Lai (March 9, Royce Hall), Eighth Blackbird featuring Will Oldham (Bonnie "Prince" Billy) (April 21, The Theatre at Ace Hotel) and Angélique Kidjo'sRemain in Light (May 5, The Theatre at Ace Hotel).
