MY FATHER'S A COP to Make Los Angeles Premiere This Winter

The Los Angeles premiere of My Father's A Cop co-written by Jerry Dean and director Kurt Brungardt opens January 6th at the Lounge Theatre (6201 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90038).

Performed by Jerry Dean, produced by Derik Howard and Kurt Brungardt the solo-show runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 7 PM through January 28th. Tickets are $20 and available at myfathersacop.brownpapertickets.com.

My Father's A Cop is a true story that traces the tumultuous relationship of Jerry Dean, a charismatic local Greenwich Village legend and his father, a decorated NYPD detective, as their paths crisscross in the worlds of crime, drug addiction, prisons, and mental hospitals. Co-written and performed by Jerry Dean, in the tradition of documentary theater, the story uses archival footage and video interviews, to chronicle Jerry's journey from extorting the owner of A&W Root Beer's son for $6,000 at his private upper east side grammar school when he was 12, to robbing 26 whore houses with a sawed-off shotgun when he was 16. In between Jerry and his teenage crew roamed the Village, tagged landmarks with legendary graffiti artists.

As an adult, Jerry bobs and weaves and swerves through downtown NYC clubs, high-end whore houses, Park Avenue brownstones, heroin dens, incarcerations in America's toughest prisons, rehab centers, iconic mental institutions (Bellevue), star friendships, run-ins with gangsters, kinky sex with supermodels, a burgeoning acting career, Hollywood hostage stand-offs, break-ups break-downs, and an undying and tumultuous relationship with his father that would make Shakespeare blush. Jerry gets his first sparks of hopes in one the darkest places on the planet- Sing-Sing Psychiatric Ward, a 30-bed facility for the state's most mentally ill criminals, when a "sexy little" social worker-angel walks into cell...

More than just Jerry's story, My Father's a Cop is about our current culture's rapid, manic cycling through the trials fame, power, money, sexual abuse and family trauma.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Jerry Dean (Writer/Performer) grew up in New York City's West Village, a third-generation Irish-American. New York City was his playground. When Jerry wasn't in prison or the psyche ward, he boxed, did graffiti, wrote, had a modeling career, and appeared in eight films, working with such esteemed directors and actors as Sidney Lumet, William Hurt, Sharon Stone, Mickey Rourke, and Tim Roth. Most recently Jerry appeared in the Martyr Maker (2017) with Tom Sizemore and Furlough (2018) with Melissa Leo.

Kurt Brungardt (Director and Co-writer) has directed over a dozen plays in New York, Los Angeles and at regional theaters. His last show in Los Angeles was Bohemian Cowboy (2010), written B. Raymond Shurtz, which had an extended run at The Elephant Theater in Los Angeles and was selected as the "Pick of the Week" by the L.A. Weekly. Most recently, his screenplay, Senior Moment (co-written with Christopher Momenee), starring William Shatner, Christopher Lloyd, and Jean Smart is in post-production. And the documentary Disappointment Valley (in collaboration with James Kleinert) will be released in 2018. Brungardt is the author of 12 books (several bestsellers) and he writes for Vanity Fair, Men's Health, and SLAM.

Derik Howard (Executive Producer) is the founder of 4Cast Multimedia, which produces films, theater, and multimedia projects.

Joe Dean ( Performer, video interviews): Joe Dean is a retired and decorated NYPD detective and Jerry's father.

Raymond King Shurtz (Set Design / Lighting/Associate Producer) is the Founding Artistic Director of Playwright's Workshop Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona, which produced eighty new plays in his 12-year tenure with the company. In 2009, Raymond produced and performed his one man show, Bohemian Cowboy, at The Elephant Theatre, pick of the week in The LA Weekly, and subsequently performed San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Southern Utah, and Austin. In 2017, he started his most recent Production Company, Dark Horse, and two new plays: Existing Conditions and El Rancho Paraiso. He also fronts a country/rock/western band, Out on Bail. He lives with his border collie/Australian shepherd, Baby.
