HUMANITAS announces the 3rd Annual Festival of New Works at CASA 0101 Theatre in Los Angeles, September 7-9, 2018. Full schedule and information can be found at PlayLA.org

Pulitzer Prize winning playwright and HUMANITAS HONOREE, Robert Schenkkan, will present a new play along with six plays by PLAY LA WINNERS at the historic theater.

PLAY LA is sponsored by HUMANITAS and is run by award-winning playwright and screenwriter, Shem Bitterman. Honoring the mission of bringing new works from page to stage, HUMANITAS awards recipients with a $1,500 grant and a full year of development under professional mentorship from industry professionals.

PLAY LA has nurtured 19 original plays that have received productions throughout the country. 2016 PLAY LA winner, Ngozi Anyanwu had a world premiere of her play Good Grief at Center Theatre Group's Kirk Douglas Theatre.

This year's PLAY LA winners are Inda Craig-Galván, Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Mildred Lewis, Jennifer Maisel and Matthew Paul Olmos. The PLAY LA Honoree playwright is Robert Schenkkan. The 2018 award celebrates writers whose work explores the human condition in nuanced, meaningful ways.

PLAY LA, now in its third year, has been responsible for nurturing 19 original plays "from the ground up." In addition, current and former PLAY LA writers are on staff at a number of prestigious television shows, from Netflix's "A Series of Unfortunate Events", to FX's "Snowfall", to HBO's "Watchmen." Past mentors have included Mike Binder, Lee Blessing, Nick Hamm, Christopher Mack, Pier Carlo Talenti and Craig Wright. At the end of the process, each play is featured as a professional workshop reading in the HUMANITAS PLAY LA Festival of New Works, produced in conjunction with celebrated local theaters.

The 2018 participating theaters, selected for their track record of producing new plays by area writers, are IAMA Theatre Company, Playwrights' Arena, The Road Theatre Company, The Robey Theatre Co., Rogue Machine Theatre and The Skylight Theatre.

In addition to the reading there will be panel discussions and a party with live music.

All events are free and open the public. Reservations are required.
