Demetra Kareman Announced As 1st Place Winner Of The ATTIC Theatre & Film Center's 18th Annual Denise Regan Wiesenmeyer One Act Play Festival

Playwright Demetra Kareman of Bronx, NY has been announced as the 1st Place Winner of The Attic Theatre and Film Center's 18th Annual Denise Ragan Wiesenmeyer One Act Play Festival for her play, Lesson & Carols, said Jamie Gray, The Attic Theatre and Film Center's Literary Manager and Producer of the One Act Play Festival. Gray continued, "The 2nd Place Winner of the competition is playwright Wendy Graf of Los Angeles, CA for her play Bethany/Bakol."

Audience Choice Awards were selected as follows: Amber Flamminio, Best Actress for her performance in Frank Cossa's play, Cross Purposes; James Carey, Best Actor for his performance in Frank Cossa's play, Cross Purposes; Lessons & Carols by Demetra Kareman as Best Ensemble Cast; and Lessons & Carols by Demetra Kareman for Best Play.

Regarding her 1st Place win, Demetra Kareman said: "I am so thrilled to hear the news and so thankful to The ATTIC for providing opportunities to hear new work. I'm also excited for the marvelous cast and crew of Lessons & Carols." In the audience to see the final performances of the One Act Play Festival on October 3rd were Demetra Kareman's godmother, actress Mary Steenburgen, and her husband, actor Ted Danson. Kareman received a $300 Cash Prize.

Regarding her 2nd Place win, Wendy Graf said: "Thank you to The ATTIC for the opportunity to see the work come to life onstage. Everyone there was terrific to work with." Graf received a $150 Cash Prize.

The other Finalist Playwrights in this year's One Act Play Festival included: Cross Purposes by Frank Cossa (of Charleston, SC) and Jon and Mary Go To Pluto by Matthew Tucker (of Los Angeles, CA).

Under the direction of Craig Jessen, the winnnng cast of Lessons & Carols included: Angela Ryskiewicz at Lila; April Grace Lowe as Gloria and Terri Marsteiner as Sr. Fleming. Under the direction of Marla DuMont, the cast of Bethany/Bakol featured actress Ali Deyer in the dual roles of Bethany/Bakol.

The winners of the four week 18th Annual Denise Ragan Wiesenmeyer One Act Play Festival, a contest for playwrights, were announced at an Awards Reception following the closing World Premiere performances of four One Act Finalists Plays on Saturday, October 3, 2009 in Culver City, CA. The four Finalist Plays were selected from among 150 new plays submitted from locally based playwrights, as well as other playwrights hailing from around the country, including international entries from Canada, Europe and Israel.

Judges for the 18th Annual Denise Ragan Wiesenmeyer One Act Play Festival included: Jen Kays, Literary Director for Circle X Theatre; Aaron Henne, Literary Manager for The Theatre @ Boston Court and George Pennacchio, Entertainment Reporter for ABC7 Eyewitness News. The Audience Choice Awards were voted upon by audience members attending performances of the plays over the four-week period.

The Attic Theatre and Film Center's Literary Committee for the One Act Play Festival selected four Finalist plays to be presented in fully staged performances at The ATTIC. The goal of the Festival is to discover fresh and exciting new theatre and writers, while providing both a fun event for the audience and simultaneously a serious professional experience for the playwrights.
