The Colburn School continues its 2017-2018 season with performances on campus and throughout the community that bring together today's greatest artists with extraordinary faculty and Colburn students in a diverse array of programs.

On November 9, as part of the "Colburn at the Steinway Gallery" series, pianist and Conservatory of Music student Dominic Cheli will perform a program of Bach, Scriabin, Brahms, Liszt and more. Cheli is an artist diploma candidate at the Colburn Conservatory of Music, where he studies with Fabio Bidini. Cheli was recently awarded joint first prize with the Argus Quartet at the 2017 Concert Artists Guild competition, held in New York in October. Cheli has performed at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Le Poisson Rouge, and Sheldon Concert Hall in his hometown, St. Louis, and recently released an album of music by Muzio Clementi.

On Friday, November 17, Colburn School's Contemporary Music Ensemble presents "Film Before Music / Music Before Film," an evening that features short films accompanied by live performance, including Georges Méliès's classic Le Voyage dans la Lune with an original score by jazz saxophonist John Ellis.

Also on the program is an original multimedia work produced by the first-year Humanities class of Colburn's Conservatory of Music, which will accompany Judd Greenstein's piece, Change, that features Colburn faculty member Kenton Youngstrom on guitar. A stop-action animated film by musician and artist Alex Sopp will also accompany Ryan Lott's (Son Lux) piece, Sunset Boulevard.

To benefit dance education at the Colburn School, and to celebrate the world premiere of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker by Miami City Ballet at The Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Colburn School will host "A Nutcracker Prelude" on Monday, November 27. Colburn School dance students will perform scenes from the classic tale of The Nutcracker, and Colburn School faculty will give an insightful discussion about this iconic holiday classic. Following the performance, the fundraiser continues on the Colburn School campus, which will be magically transformed into a Nutcracker Village, including the Living Room, A Snowy Pine Forest, and The Land of Sweets. Nutcracker Village tickets are available for purchase, and includes festive food and drink, as well as activities for children including dance instruction. George Balanchine's The Nutcracker by Miami City Ballet at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion takes place Dec. 7-10, and features student dancers from the Colburn School and The Gabriella Foundation's everybody dance! Program.

On Sunday, December 3, members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Brass join Conservatory of Music students in a Colburn Chamber Music Society concert featuring the works of Bach, Poulenc, Holst, Timo Andres and more.

On Sunday, December 10, in an all-Rachmaninoff program, Music Director Yehuda Gilad leads the Colburn Orchestra and piano soloist HyeJin Kim at Valley Performing Arts Center in Rachmaninoff's legendary Piano Concerto No. 3. Praised by critics for her "passionate ... polished and expressive" performances, pianist HyeJin Kim is one of South Korea's most thrilling young classical stars. HyeJin is in her second year of the Artist Diploma program at Colburn School. Kim has previously recorded both Rachmaninoff's Piano Concertos No. 1 and No. 2 for Sony Classical. The program concludes with the composer's triumphant Second Symphony.
