Charles Dutoit Leads the LA Phil In ROMEO AND JULIET 10/22-24

By:

Renowned conductor Charles Dutoit returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall to lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Hector Berlioz' large-scale choral symphony Romeo and Juliet, Friday and Saturday, October 22 and 23, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, October 24, at 2 p.m. Also performing are mezzo-soprano Lauren McNeese, tenor Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, bass Jonathan Lemalu and the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

Romeo and Juliet is considered one of Berlioz' finest works. The libretto, by Émile Deschamps, is based on a version of Shakespeare's play in which Juliet awakens from her death-like sleep before Romeo dies from a slower-acting poison. The roles of Romeo and Juliet are represented by the orchestra and the narrative aspects by the voices.

Charles Dutoit's history with the Los Angeles Philharmonic dates back to 1972. Recently appointed Chief Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra as well as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, he regularly collaborates with the world's pre-eminent orchestras and soloists.

All three soloists are making their Walt Disney Concert Hall debuts.

Giving a voice to Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Grammy-nominated Los Angeles Master Chorale (LAMC), considered one of the world's leading choirs, is led by Music Director Grant Gershon. The Chorale is currently in its 47th season as a resident company of the Music Center of Los Angeles County and its 8th as the resident chorus at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
