Formed in 1986, to perform at the “Tubafest”, the Long Island Tuba Quartet was such a hit that year that the members kept it going. Since then, the group has performed on faculty department music recitals for various school districts throughout Long Island. The group has also appeared as guests with community, high school concert bands, at libraries and parks. The group's most unusual engagement took place when the ensemble performed in Stony Brook at a seminar on "death and dying." At the opposite end of the spectrum, the group has performed the music for wedding ceremonies and at Christmas parties. The members of the group since its inception are Bill Troiano and Jeff Furman (tubas) and Don Sherman and Michael Canipe (euphoniums). Bill Troiano has chaired the SCMEA Day of Tuba and Euphonium for the past 31 years. He was also a member of the Guy Lombardo Orchestra from 1976-78. Don Sherman teaches in the Northport School District and conducted the Fordham University Band for nine years is currently the associate conductor of the Northport Community Band. Michael Canipe was formerly the Director of Performing Arts for the Deer Park School District and later, the South Huntington School District. He is currently the conductor of the Gemini Winds. Jeff Furman is a computer consultant in his own business who just loves to play the tuba. Combining each of the player's performance experiences together, they have played with almost every musical organization on Long Island. Performing music in many styles from classical, to Broadway, movie music, early pop standards, jazz and rock. LITQ is definitely a sound to be heard and a good time is always had by all, especially by LITQ themselves.
