This is the story of Oedipus's daughter, Antigone (Ruth Rasiuk), whose two brothers killed each other. One brother was buried as a hero while the other was declared an enemy of the people and his body was left prey to the vultures. Creon (Shmuel Vilozhny), the town's ruler and Antigone's uncle, forbade any approach to the body and ordered the execution of anyone trying to cover or bury it. Antigone buries her brother with his childhood spade, knowing full well she is destined to die.

Anti is the story of a young girl challenging the law and following her heart, who like her father throws herself into the arms of cruel fate, risking the lives of her fiancé, her sister and everything dear to her, in her rebellion against law and order. The renowned French playwright Jean Anouilh decided in 1944, in the wake of the First World War, to write a modern version of Sophocles' classic Greek play "Antigone". He speeded up the rhythm, "cleaned up" the pathos in the speech and emphasized the human-political and personal-collective conflicts. The scenes between Antigone and her sister, her lover, her nurse and her uncle, evoke the image of a modern adolescent, rebellious and forceful, emotional and pure, who wants everything here and now, thus enabling both young and old audiences to identify absolutely with this immortal tragedy.

The Gesher theatre has put on a grand poetical production, not of a long-lost world and reality, but of our vibrant world. The poignant deliberation between a ruler and a young girl forces us to take sides, which is no simple matter. Our lives today lack a cause worth dying for. But perhaps the turmoil of our times may still bring about the upheaval of conventions by a brave young person.
